About
Arch support is a structured feature designed to support the natural arch of the foot, typically through footwear, insoles, inserts or orthotic devices. It provides contact beneath part of the foot's arch and can influence how the foot interacts with the shoe and the ground.
Arch support is commonly found in shoes, sandals, slippers, insoles and foot orthoses. Depending on its shape, material and design, it can provide anything from relatively gentle support to a more structured interface beneath the arch.
But what exactly is an arch? What does arch support support? Are arch-support insoles the same as orthotics? Does everyone need arch support? And how do you know what type of support is appropriate?
This complete guide explains the basics of foot arch support, including the different types of foot arches, types of arch support, arch-support insoles, inserts, orthotics, shoes with arch support and commonly used terminology.
Quick answer: Arch support is a shaped or structured part of footwear or an insert that provides contact beneath the foot's arch. It is designed to support the foot during weight-bearing activities such as standing and walking. The amount and type of support that feels appropriate can vary significantly between individuals.
Arch support is a raised, shaped or structured area that contacts the underside of the foot's arch.
You may find arch support built directly into footwear or added separately through an insole or insert.
Its purpose is not simply to create a bump underneath the foot. The shape, location, firmness and height of the support determine how it interacts with the foot.
Arch support can be incorporated into:
The term “arch support” describes a feature or function rather than one specific type of product.
For example, a pair of shoes may have built-in arch support, while an insole may provide adjustable or more structured arch support.
The arch of the foot is the curved structure formed by the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the foot.
When people talk about “the arch” of the foot, they most commonly mean the medial longitudinal arch, which runs along the inner side of the foot from the heel toward the forefoot.
However, the foot contains more than one arch.
The main anatomical arches are:
Medial longitudinal arch - the prominent arch along the inner side of the foot
Lateral longitudinal arch - runs along the outer side of the foot
Transverse arch - runs across the foot from side to side
These structures work together as part of the foot's overall architecture.
The shape and behavior of these arches vary naturally between people.
The arches contribute to the foot's ability to bear, distribute and transfer loads while allowing the foot to adapt to different surfaces and movements.
The foot needs to perform several seemingly opposing functions.
It needs to be:
Flexible enough to adapt to the ground
Stable enough to support body weight
Capable of absorbing and transferring forces
Able to help propel the body forward during walking and running
The arches are part of the system that allows the foot to perform these functions.
However, an arch that looks “low” does not automatically mean the foot is unhealthy or requires support.
Foot shape exists on a spectrum, and people can have different arch structures without experiencing symptoms.
Foot arches are commonly described as low, medium or high, although real feet do not always fit neatly into three categories.
Low Arches
A low arch has a relatively smaller visible curve along the inside of the foot.
The term flat feet or pes planus is sometimes used when the medial longitudinal arch appears flattened, although flat-foot structure and foot function are more nuanced than appearance alone.
Some people with low arches have no symptoms and do not require additional support.
Others may prefer or benefit from footwear or insoles designed to provide additional support or alter pressure distribution.
Medium or Neutral Arches
A medium arch falls between very low and very high arches.
Many conventional shoes and insoles are designed around this broad range of foot shapes.
High Arches
A high arch has a more pronounced curve along the inside of the foot.
People with high arches can have different pressure-distribution characteristics compared with people with lower arches. Research examining the relationship between foot posture and plantar pressure has found differences in pressure patterns between planus and cavus foot postures.
A high arch does not automatically mean that a person needs arch support either.
The appropriate approach depends on the individual's foot structure, symptoms, activity and footwear.
Arch support insoles are removable or replacement insoles designed with a shaped region that provides support beneath the foot's arch.
Unlike a completely flat insole, an arch-support insole incorporates a contour intended to interact with the arch area.
An arch-support insole may combine several features, such as:
Arch contour
Cushioning
Heel support
Heel cup
Forefoot cushioning
Shock-absorbing materials
Moisture-management materials
Structured or semi-structured materials
This means arch support and cushioning are not necessarily the same thing.
An insole can provide both.
For a detailed comparison, read Arch Support vs Cushioning: What's the Difference?.
An arch support insert is a removable device placed inside footwear to provide additional contact or support beneath the foot's arch.
“Insert” is a broad term.
An insert may provide:
Arch support
Cushioning
Heel support
Pressure redistribution
A combination of these features
Some inserts are designed for general comfort, while others are designed around specific foot conditions or biomechanical objectives.
Therefore, not every shoe insert is an arch-support insert, and not every arch-support insert is the same.
Is an Arch Support the Same as an Insole?
No.
An insole is the layer or insert that sits inside a shoe underneath the foot.
Arch support is a feature that may be incorporated into that insole.
Think of it this way:
Insole = the product/component
Arch support = one of the features that the product/component may provide
For example, a flat insole may provide little or no structured arch support, while a contoured insole may include a dedicated arch-support area.
This distinction becomes important when comparing products.
Are Arch Supports the Same as Orthotics?
Not exactly.
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they are not necessarily identical.
An orthosis or orthotic device is generally designed to influence the position, movement, loading or function of part of the body.
An arch support may be a component of an orthotic device.
At the same time, a commercially available arch-support insole does not automatically become a custom orthotic simply because it has an arch contour.
The term orthotic therefore covers a broader category than arch support alone.
Research commonly evaluates foot orthoses as devices that can alter plantar pressure and aspects of lower-limb mechanics. For example, systematic reviews have examined how different orthotic geometries affect gait and lower-limb kinematics and kinetics.
Arch Support vs Orthotics
| Feature | Arch Support | Orthotic Device |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A support feature or device for the foot arch | A broader category of biomechanical support device |
| Can it be part of an insole? | Yes | Yes |
| Can it be built into footwear? | Yes | Sometimes |
| Is it necessarily custom-made? | No | No |
| Can it influence foot mechanics? | Potentially | Potentially |
| Does it always correct a foot problem? | No |
The exact terminology can vary between manufacturers, clinicians and everyday usage.
Arch support can be used for several different purposes depending on the product and the individual.
Common reasons people look for arch support include:
Everyday walking
Prolonged standing
Work footwear
Running and sports
General foot support
Foot comfort
Different foot shapes
Flat or low arches
High arches
Existing foot-related symptoms
However, the fact that a product provides arch support does not mean everyone needs it.
The question of whether you personally may benefit from additional support is different from the question of what arch support is.
For that decision, see Do You Need Arch Support? Signs You May Benefit From It.
Arch support primarily provides contact beneath the underside of the foot's arch.
Depending on the design, the supported area can include portions of the:
Medial midfoot
Longitudinal arch
Rearfoot-to-midfoot transition
Other parts of the plantar surface
The exact contact pattern depends on the geometry of the product.
This is why two products both marketed as “arch support” can feel completely different.
One may have:
A broad, gentle contour
while another may have:
A narrow, pronounced contour
The material can also change the experience.
A softer material may deform under load, while a firmer structure may maintain its shape more strongly.
A well-fitting arch support may feel like gentle, noticeable contact beneath the arch.
It should not necessarily feel like a large object pushing aggressively into the foot.
People may describe appropriate support as:
Supported
Stable
Comfortable
Gently contoured
Less “flat” under the foot
However, there is no universal sensation that proves an arch support is working correctly.
If an arch support creates persistent pain, excessive pressure, numbness or significant discomfort, the product may not be appropriate for your foot or footwear.
Arch support should generally be positioned so that the contoured portion of the insole corresponds appropriately with the arch region of the foot.
The exact position depends on:
Foot size
Foot shape
Insole geometry
Shoe design
Support height
Product construction
An arch-support feature that sits too far forward or backward may feel different from one positioned appropriately for the foot.
This is one reason why simply choosing the “strongest” or highest arch support is not necessarily the best approach.
Is More Arch Support Better?
No.
More support does not automatically mean better support.
The objective is an appropriate interaction between:
Foot + support + footwear + activity
An excessively prominent support can create uncomfortable pressure.
A support that is too soft or poorly positioned may not provide the desired effect.
Research shows that different foot-orthosis designs can produce different biomechanical outcomes, which reinforces the fact that design matters rather than simply the presence or absence of arch support.
Arch support and cushioning solve different problems.
Arch Support
Arch support primarily refers to structured or contoured support beneath the foot's arch.
Cushioning
Cushioning refers to materials or structures intended to change how forces and impacts are experienced by the foot.
A product can contain both.
For example, an insole may have:
A shaped arch-support structure
Cushioning foam
A heel cup
A cushioned forefoot
This is why “soft” does not necessarily mean “supportive,” and “supportive” does not necessarily mean “hard.”
For the detailed comparison between the two, see Arch Support vs Cushioning: What's the Difference?.
At a basic level, arch support works by changing the interface between the underside of the foot and the footwear.
When you stand or walk, forces are transmitted between:
Body → Foot → Insole/Shoe → Ground
An arch-support structure changes the surface beneath the foot.
Depending on its geometry and material, it can alter:
Contact area
Plantar pressure
Pressure distribution
Foot movement
Certain aspects of gait mechanics
Research on foot orthoses has demonstrated that orthotic materials and designs can change plantar-pressure measurements. A systematic review found that several materials, including EVA, polyurethane and polyethylene, reduced peak plantar pressure in studied regions, although the evidence base was limited and laboratory-based.
A more recent systematic review also found that foot orthoses can alter plantar loading, while noting important differences between designs and populations.
For the complete biomechanics explanation, read How Does Arch Support Work? Foot Alignment & Pressure Distribution.
This is one of the most important misconceptions to clarify.
Arch support can influence the mechanical environment around the foot, but that does not mean it permanently realigns or reshapes the foot.
While wearing an appropriately designed support, the position and movement of the foot may change.
Research has found that some orthotic designs can influence aspects of ankle and lower-limb mechanics. However, effects vary depending on the design and the individual.
Therefore, it is more accurate to say:
Arch support can influence foot mechanics while it is being worn.
rather than:
Arch support permanently corrects your foot alignment.
That distinction is particularly important when evaluating claims about flat feet, pronation and posture.
Does Everyone Need Arch Support?
No.
Having an arch - whether low, medium or high - does not automatically determine whether you need additional support.
Some people naturally have low arches and have no problems with walking, running or standing.
Others may experience discomfort or fatigue and may choose supportive footwear or insoles.
Similarly, people with high arches may have different pressure patterns but do not automatically need a particular type of support.
The appropriate decision depends on the individual rather than arch height alone.
For a detailed guide to signs that you may benefit from additional support, see Do You Need Arch Support? Signs You May Benefit From It.
Not necessarily.
Flat feet describe a foot shape or posture, but they do not automatically indicate a need for arch-support products.
Some people with flat feet have no symptoms.
Others may seek support because of discomfort, fatigue or activity-related issues.
Research has found that foot posture and plantar-pressure patterns can be related, although the relationship is complex and varies between individuals.
If you are interested in this specific topic, it is better to evaluate the symptoms, function and individual foot mechanics rather than relying on arch height alone.
Do High Arches Need Arch Support?
High arches do not automatically mean that a person needs more arch support.
People with higher arches can have different plantar-pressure patterns from people with flatter feet. A systematic review found that cavus/high-arched feet tended to show higher pressure-related measures at the heel and lateral forefoot, while planus/low-arched feet showed different patterns involving the medial arch and forefoot.
This demonstrates why one support design cannot necessarily suit every foot type.
Arch support can be categorized in several ways.
1. Built-In Arch Support
This is integrated into the footwear itself.
Examples include:
Walking shoes
Running shoes
Sandals
Slippers
Work shoes
The advantage is convenience because the support is part of the footwear.
2. Removable Arch-Support Insoles
These are placed inside existing shoes.
They allow you to add or change the support without replacing the entire shoe.
They may also combine arch support with cushioning and heel support.
3. Arch-Support Inserts
These are smaller or more targeted products designed to add support to a specific region.
Depending on the design, they may attach to or sit inside the footwear.
4. Custom Orthotic Devices
These are designed specifically for an individual's foot characteristics and clinical requirements.
They are distinct from ordinary over-the-counter arch-support insoles.
5. Semi-Structured Arch Support
These products combine some degree of structure with cushioning or flexibility.
They are common in everyday footwear and general-purpose insoles.
Arch-support products can be made using different materials and combinations of materials.
Common examples include:
EVA
Polyurethane
Foam
Thermoplastic materials
Rubber-like compounds
Composite materials
Fabric-covered structures
Material affects characteristics such as:
Firmness
Flexibility
Durability
Cushioning
Weight
Pressure distribution
Research has specifically examined how different orthotic materials influence plantar pressure, with several materials demonstrating pressure-reducing effects in laboratory walking studies.
However, material alone does not determine whether an arch support is appropriate. Geometry, thickness, shape, footwear compatibility and individual fit all matter.
There are two common ways to obtain arch support.
Built Into the Shoe
The support is part of the shoe's construction.
Potential advantages:
Convenient
No separate insole required
Designed as part of the shoe
Added Through an Insole
A removable insole provides the support.
Potential advantages:
Can be transferred between compatible shoes
Allows you to change the support without replacing the shoe
Can combine arch support with cushioning
Provides more choice in support design
Neither approach is automatically better.
The right choice depends on the footwear, foot shape, activity and personal preference.
When evaluating an arch-support product, look beyond the words “arch support” on the packaging.
Consider:
1. Shape
Does the contour correspond reasonably well with your foot?
2. Support Level
Is the support gentle, moderate or highly structured?
3. Material
Does the material provide the firmness and cushioning you want?
4. Shoe Compatibility
Will the insole fit properly without making the shoe too tight?
5. Heel Stability
Does the product keep the heel positioned comfortably?
6. Overall Comfort
Does the support feel comfortable during the activity for which you intend to use it?
7. Intended Use
An insole for everyday walking may have different design priorities from one intended for running or prolonged standing.
Yes.
One of the simplest ways to add arch support to existing footwear is through a compatible arch-support insole or insert.
However, the shoe must have sufficient internal space to accommodate the additional structure.
Before adding an insole, consider:
Existing removable insole
Internal shoe volume
Heel fit
Toe space
Arch position
Overall comfort
A thicker support placed inside a shoe that already fits tightly can reduce usable space and create pressure elsewhere.
Not always.
Compatibility depends on the shoe's:
Internal volume
Removable insole
Heel construction
Opening
Shape
Width
Some footwear accommodates replacement insoles easily, while others may not.
Always check that the insole sits flat and securely inside the shoe.
At its simplest, the purpose of arch support is to provide structured contact beneath the foot's arch and influence the way the foot interacts with the footwear.
Depending on the design and individual, this may affect:
Foot comfort
Contact area
Pressure distribution
Foot mechanics
Walking or running mechanics
It is important not to confuse these potential effects with guaranteed clinical outcomes.
For a detailed discussion of what arch support may do and who may benefit, read What Does Arch Support Do? Benefits, Uses & Who Needs It.
Arch support can contribute to comfort for some people, but comfort is highly individual.
A support that feels comfortable to one person may feel too prominent to another.
Comfort depends on factors such as:
Foot shape
Support contour
Material
Shoe fit
Activity
Duration of wear
There is also an important distinction between mechanical changes and clinical outcomes.
Research can demonstrate changes in pressure or movement without proving that every person will experience better comfort.
For a dedicated evidence-focused discussion, see Can Arch Support Improve Foot Comfort? What the Evidence Says.
Arch Support Terminology: A Quick Guide
The terminology surrounding foot support can be confusing.
| Term | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| Arch support | A feature or device that provides structured contact beneath the foot's arch |
| Insole | A layer or removable component placed inside footwear |
| Insert | A removable component added inside footwear |
| Orthotic | A broader term for a device intended to influence body position, movement or function |
| Footbed | The surface inside footwear on which the foot rests |
| Cushioning | Material or structure designed to alter impact/loading characteristics |
| Heel cup | A structure designed to cradle or stabilize the heel area |
| Arch pad | A localized support feature beneath the arch |
These terms can overlap in commercial product descriptions, so it is useful to look at the actual design rather than relying solely on the product name.
Myth 1: Everyone Needs Arch Support
False.
Many people function comfortably without additional arch support.
Myth 2: More Arch Support Is Always Better
False.
A higher or firmer support is not automatically more appropriate.
Myth 3: Arch Support Permanently Fixes Flat Feet
Not established.
An insole can influence mechanics while worn, but that is different from permanently changing foot structure.
Myth 4: Arch Support and Cushioning Are the Same
False.
They can coexist in the same product but serve different design functions.
Myth 5: All Arch Supports Are the Same
False.
Arch supports differ in:
Height
Shape
Width
Firmness
Material
Position
Overall construction
Myth 6: Arch Support Is Only for People With Foot Problems
Not necessarily.
Arch support is also incorporated into everyday footwear and products designed for comfort or prolonged standing.
However, using arch support doesn't mean that someone has a medical condition.
Arch support is a structured feature that provides contact beneath the foot's arch.
It can be built into shoes or provided through removable insoles, inserts and orthotic devices.
The important thing to understand is that arch support is not one single product and it is not synonymous with cushioning or orthotics.
Different arch-support products vary in:
Shape
Height
Firmness
Material
Coverage
Position
Intended use
The foot itself also varies naturally from person to person.
Research shows that foot-support devices can influence plantar-pressure distribution and aspects of foot and lower-limb mechanics, but these effects depend on the design and individual.
So the best way to think about arch support is not “more support is better.”
It is:
The right support is support that is appropriately designed for the foot, footwear and activity - and feels appropriate for the individual using it.
