If you've ever wondered how arch support works, the answer goes beyond simply “supporting your arch.”
An arch-support insole changes the way your foot interacts with the surface beneath it. Depending on its design, it can increase contact beneath the arch, redistribute plantar pressure and influence aspects of foot and lower-limb mechanics during standing, walking or running.
But there is an important distinction: arch support can influence foot mechanics without necessarily permanently correcting or realigning the foot.
This guide explains how arch support works, how it affects pressure distribution, what it may do to foot alignment and gait, and what research actually tells us about these effects.
Arch support works by providing structured contact beneath the foot's arch, which can change how pressure and forces are distributed across the foot during weight-bearing activities.
When you stand or move, your feet interact continuously with the ground. Your arches help the foot balance flexibility and stability as it accepts and transfers load.
An arch-support insole introduces a shaped surface underneath part of the foot. This can:
Increase contact beneath the midfoot
Redistribute plantar pressure
Change the location and magnitude of pressure peaks
Influence how the foot moves during gait
Alter aspects of ankle and lower-limb mechanics
Change how supported or comfortable the foot feels
The exact effect depends on the shape, height, firmness and placement of the support, as well as your foot structure, footwear and activity.
Research on foot orthoses has consistently demonstrated that orthotic design can alter plantar-pressure patterns. A systematic review found that different orthotic materials can reduce peak plantar pressure during walking, although the magnitude and location of the effect vary between materials and studies.
To understand how arch support works, it helps to understand what normally happens when you walk.
During walking, your foot goes through a sequence of loading and unloading.
In simplified terms:
The heel contacts the ground.
Your body moves forward over the foot.
The midfoot helps accommodate the ground and transfer load.
The forefoot becomes increasingly involved.
The toes help with propulsion as you push off.
At every stage, pressure is distributed across different areas of the sole.
This distribution isn't fixed. It changes depending on:
Walking speed
Foot structure
Body position
Surface
Footwear
Activity
Muscle function
Insole design
An arch-support insole changes the surface under the foot, which can therefore change this pressure distribution.
Pressure distribution is one of the clearest ways researchers can measure the biomechanical effect of arch-support insoles.
Instead of thinking of the insole as simply “lifting” the arch, think of it as changing where and how the foot experiences load.
An arch-shaped support can increase contact between the insole and the underside of the midfoot.
This doesn't mean that the entire body weight is transferred into the arch.
Rather, increasing contact area can change how load is distributed across different regions of the sole.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of foot orthoses during running found that both custom and off-the-shelf arch-support orthoses reduced peak plantar pressure at several heel and forefoot regions while increasing pressure at the midfoot.
This is an important finding because it demonstrates that arch support doesn't simply reduce pressure everywhere-it redistributes pressure.
Suppose an area of the foot experiences a relatively high pressure.
An appropriately designed insole may increase contact elsewhere and change how the overall load is shared.
This is why the phrase “pressure redistribution” is more accurate than saying that arch support simply “reduces pressure.”
Research examining orthotic materials has similarly found that some materials can reduce peak plantar pressure during walking, but effects vary according to material, thickness and the region of the foot being measured.
If an arch-support insole increases pressure beneath the midfoot, that doesn't automatically mean the support is causing a problem.
The purpose of the support may be to redistribute load from other regions.
For example, a systematic review of running studies found reduced peak pressure at several heel and forefoot areas alongside increased midfoot pressure with arch-support orthoses.
The important question is therefore not:
“Does the arch support increase pressure somewhere?”
It is:
“Does the overall pressure distribution become appropriate and comfortable for the individual and activity?”
This is where the terminology needs some care.
People often say that arch support “aligns” or “realigns” the foot.
A more scientifically accurate description is that arch-support designs can influence aspects of foot position and movement during weight-bearing activities.
They don't necessarily permanently reshape the foot.
Research examining adults with flexible flat feet has found that foot orthoses can affect lower-limb joint angles and moments during walking.
Other research has observed changes in ankle and tibial motion with specific arch-support designs.
So, rather than thinking:
Arch support permanently fixes your alignment.
Think:
Arch support can modify the mechanical environment in which your foot moves.
That distinction matters.
Not necessarily.
Arch support can influence foot position, pressure distribution and movement while you are wearing it, but that doesn't mean it permanently corrects your underlying foot structure.
The effect depends on:
Arch height
Support geometry
Support firmness
Heel structure
Foot flexibility
Footwear
Activity
Individual biomechanics
This is why claims such as “arch support permanently fixes flat feet” or “arch support corrects everyone's gait” are too broad.
The evidence is stronger for short-term or task-specific biomechanical changes than for universal permanent realignment.
Foot mechanics describes how the foot moves and responds to forces during activities such as standing, walking and running.
Arch-support insoles can influence several aspects of these mechanics.
1. Plantar Pressure
Plantar pressure refers to the pressure experienced underneath the foot.
Arch support can change:
Peak pressure
Pressure-time integral
Contact area
Pressure distribution between foot regions
These variables are frequently used in research to understand how orthoses change the interaction between the foot and the ground.
2. Center of Pressure
The Center of Pressure (CoP) describes the point location of the resultant force acting under the foot.
As you walk, the center of pressure moves across the foot.
Changing the geometry of an insole can influence this pressure pathway.
Research on foot orthoses has therefore examined changes in center-of-pressure behavior alongside plantar pressure and gait mechanics.
The key point is that an insole doesn't simply “hold” the foot in one position. It can alter how forces move through the foot during movement.
3. Ankle Mechanics
The foot and ankle work together.
When the mechanical behavior of the foot changes, aspects of ankle motion can also change.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of running studies found that certain arch-support configurations affected ankle and tibial motion, although the effects varied depending on the specific orthosis design.
4. Lower-Limb Mechanics
The foot is the base of the lower limb.
Changes at the foot can therefore be associated with changes farther up the kinetic chain.
Research in adults with flexible flat feet has found that foot orthoses can influence lower-limb joint angles and moments during walking.
However, this does not mean that every person wearing an arch-support insole will experience the same changes at the knee or hip.
It can change certain aspects of walking mechanics, but the effect varies between people and between support designs.
Walking involves coordinated movement between:
Foot
Ankle
Knee
Hip
Pelvis
An arch-support insole changes the interface between the foot and shoe, which can influence how the foot behaves during different phases of gait.
Research in adults with flexible flat feet has found measurable changes in lower-limb joint angles and moments when foot orthoses were used during walking.
This doesn't mean that arch support necessarily makes someone's walking pattern “better.”
It means that the mechanics of walking can change in response to the support.
Whether that change is beneficial depends on the person's needs, symptoms, activity and the particular design of the orthosis.
Gait is the pattern of movement used during walking.
Arch support can potentially influence gait by changing:
Plantar pressure
Foot motion
Ankle motion
Timing and location of loading
Ground-reaction-force behavior
Lower-limb joint mechanics
Research involving arch-support orthoses has demonstrated changes in pressure distribution and selected lower-limb kinematic variables.
However, changing gait is not automatically the same as improving gait.
This is an important distinction when evaluating arch-support products.
Plantar pressure is the pressure applied to the bottom of the foot during weight-bearing.
It isn't distributed equally.
Different areas-including the heel, midfoot, forefoot and toes-experience different pressures at different points during movement.
Researchers can measure plantar pressure using specialized in-shoe pressure measurement systems.
These measurements help researchers understand how footwear and orthoses affect the interaction between the foot and the ground.
Understanding pressure distribution can help explain why an insole may feel different even when the shoe itself hasn't changed.
If an insole increases contact beneath the arch and redistributes load toward the midfoot, the pressure experienced elsewhere can change.
That doesn't automatically mean the total force on the foot has disappeared.
Instead, the location and distribution of that force have changed.
Yes, research indicates that arch-support orthoses can redistribute plantar pressure, although the pattern depends on the design.
A systematic review of running studies found that custom and off-the-shelf arch-support orthoses reduced peak pressure in several heel and forefoot regions while increasing midfoot pressure.
A separate systematic review of orthotic materials found that materials such as polyurethane, polyethylene and EVA reduced peak plantar pressure in several studied regions during walking.
This reinforces an important principle:
Arch support is about redistribution-not simply eliminating pressure.
Not necessarily.
A higher arch contour may create more contact or pressure beneath the arch, but that doesn't automatically make it more effective.
The ideal amount of support depends on the individual and the intended use.
A support that is too prominent can feel intrusive or uncomfortable.
Research also demonstrates that different orthotic designs produce different biomechanical effects.
Therefore:
More arch support ≠ automatically better arch support.
The goal is an appropriate interaction between the foot, insole and shoe.
Yes.
If an arch-support contour is too high or poorly matched to the foot, it may create excessive pressure or discomfort beneath the arch.
Possible signs that a support isn't working well include:
Persistent arch pressure
New foot pain
Numbness or tingling
Feeling that the foot is being pushed unnaturally
Discomfort that gets worse with continued use
If this happens, the solution isn't necessarily to “get used to it.”
The support may simply be unsuitable for your foot or incompatible with the shoe.
Pronation is a normal part of foot movement.
The problem is that the term is often used online as if all pronation is abnormal.
It isn't.
During walking and running, the foot naturally moves through different positions as it accepts and transfers load.
Arch-support orthoses can influence this movement in some people.
For example, research in runners with asymptomatic flat feet suggests that certain arch-support configurations with medial posts may reduce peak ankle eversion and influence loading of structures around the foot and ankle.
That doesn't mean every person with pronation needs an arch-support insole.
The objective should be appropriate mechanics and comfort, not eliminating every movement of the foot.
Flat feet are often associated with a lower or less pronounced medial longitudinal arch.
But foot shape alone doesn't tell you whether additional support is necessary.
Some people with flat feet have no symptoms and perform activities normally.
Others may experience:
Foot fatigue
Discomfort
A feeling of instability
Difficulty tolerating prolonged standing
Activity-related symptoms
Research indicates that orthoses can change plantar pressure and lower-limb mechanics in people with flexible flat feet.
Arch support and cushioning are related but serve different purposes.
Arch support primarily provides structured contact beneath the foot and can influence pressure distribution and mechanics.
Cushioning primarily changes how the foot experiences impact and loading through the properties of the material beneath it.
An insole can provide both.
For example, a product may combine a shaped arch-support structure with cushioning material.
But one shouldn't be substituted for the other simply because both can affect comfort.

An arch-support insole effectively changes the interface between your foot and your shoe.
Think of the system as:
Foot → Insole → Shoe → Ground
Each component influences the forces experienced during movement.
The insole can change:
Where the foot contacts the shoe
How much contact occurs beneath the arch
How pressure is distributed
How stable the foot feels
How the foot interacts with the shoe during movement
This is why the same arch support can feel different in different shoes.
A supportive insole placed inside a shoe with insufficient space may create unwanted pressure, while the same insole may feel comfortable in a properly fitted shoe.
There is no basis for assuming that a standard arch-support insole permanently reshapes everyone's foot.
Most of the evidence discussed here concerns what happens while the orthosis is being worn-for example, changes in plantar pressure, foot position, joint motion or gait mechanics.
This is an important distinction.
An insole can modify the mechanical environment around your foot without permanently changing the anatomy of your arch.
It may influence aspects of alignment and movement while worn, but “improve” is context-dependent.
If a person's foot is moving in a way associated with symptoms or inefficient loading, a particular support may produce a useful mechanical change.
For someone else, the same support may provide little benefit or feel uncomfortable.
This is why arch support should be viewed as an individualized mechanical intervention, not a universal alignment correction.
If you're trying to determine whether you may actually benefit from arch support, read Do You Need Arch Support? Signs You May Benefit From It.
This is one of the most commonly overstated claims about arch support.
Your feet are connected mechanically to the rest of your lower limb, so changes at the foot can influence movement elsewhere.
However, that doesn't mean an arch-support insole automatically “fixes posture.”
Evidence supports changes in foot and lower-limb mechanics with some orthotic designs, but those findings shouldn't be converted into a blanket promise of improved whole-body posture.
A more accurate statement is:
Arch support may influence lower-limb mechanics, but its effect on whole-body posture varies between individuals.
The evidence provides a fairly clear picture of the mechanical effects, but a more nuanced picture of the clinical outcomes.
What Research Supports
Research indicates that foot orthoses can:
Change plantar-pressure distribution
Increase or decrease pressure in specific regions
Increase midfoot contact or pressure
Influence ankle and tibial motion
Affect some lower-limb joint mechanics
Alter aspects of gait and running mechanics
For example, a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that arch-support orthoses altered plantar pressure at the heel, forefoot and midfoot and affected selected ankle and tibial variables.
What Research Does Not Establish
It would be inappropriate to conclude from these findings that arch support:
Permanently changes everyone's foot structure
Corrects everyone's pronation
Automatically improves posture
Eliminates all foot pain
Prevents every running injury
Works identically for every person
The researchers themselves emphasize that orthotic interventions need to be appropriately optimized and that biomechanical effects don't automatically translate into improved performance or prevention of injury.
No.
Individual response can depend on:
Foot structure
Symptoms
Activity
Shoe design
Insole geometry
Support height
Material
Firmness
Duration of use
This is why two people can use the same insole and have very different experiences.
For a broader discussion of potential benefits and who may benefit, see What Does Arch Support Do? Benefits, Uses & Who Needs It.
If you are new to arch support, consider introducing it gradually rather than immediately wearing it for an entire day.
A practical approach is:
Use it for a shorter period initially.
Pay attention to how your feet respond.
Gradually increase wear time if it remains comfortable.
Make sure the insole sits correctly inside the shoe.
Reassess if you experience persistent or significant discomfort.
An arch support should feel supportive-not painful.
If you develop significant or persistent symptoms, stop and consider whether the product, fit or underlying condition needs professional assessment.
Arch support isn't a substitute for diagnosing the cause of persistent foot pain.
Consider professional evaluation if you experience:
Persistent or worsening foot pain
Sudden or severe pain
Significant swelling
Numbness or unusual sensations
Difficulty walking normally
Recurrent injuries
Symptoms that interfere with everyday activities
A qualified healthcare professional can assess whether your symptoms are related to foot structure, footwear, activity, injury or another underlying condition.
How does arch support work?
It works primarily by changing the mechanical interaction between your foot, insole, shoe and ground.
An appropriately designed arch support can:
Increase contact beneath the arch
Redistribute plantar pressure
Influence pressure pathways
Affect aspects of foot and ankle movement
Change selected lower-limb mechanics
Alter how the foot interacts with the ground during walking or running
Research provides strong evidence that foot orthoses can change plantar-pressure patterns, while systematic reviews also show effects on selected gait and lower-limb mechanics.
But the most important takeaway is this:
Arch support does not simply “hold your arch up” or permanently “realign” every foot. It changes the mechanical environment in which your foot operates.
Whether that change is useful depends on your individual foot structure, activity, footwear, symptoms and the design of the support.
If you're looking at arch support because you're experiencing discomfort or fatigue, the next question isn't necessarily “What is the strongest support?”
It's:
“What type and amount of support is appropriate for my feet?”
