Can arch support improve foot comfort? For some people, yes. Research suggests that appropriately designed foot orthoses and arch-support insoles can change plantar-pressure distribution, foot mechanics and, in some situations, perceived comfort or fatigue. However, the evidence does not support the idea that every person needs arch support or that more support automatically means more comfort.
The effect depends on factors such as foot structure, the design of the insole, activity, footwear and the individual’s symptoms.
In other words, arch support may contribute to better foot comfort, but it should not be viewed as a universal solution for every type of foot discomfort.
Yes, arch support can improve foot comfort for some people, particularly when the support is appropriately designed and suited to the individual's feet and activity.
Research has found that foot orthoses can alter plantar-pressure distribution and aspects of foot mechanics. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 studies involving running found that both custom and off-the-shelf arch-support orthoses reduced plantar pressure in several heel and forefoot regions. The same review found a significant improvement in perceived comfort with custom foot orthoses compared with controls.
More recent research has also found that arch-support insoles reduced measures of lower-extremity muscle fatigue during uphill and downhill walking in a small group of people with flat feet.
However, these findings should be interpreted carefully. Studies differ in their participants, insole designs, activities and outcomes. A systematic review of adults with flat feet, for example, concluded that the overall evidence for foot orthoses remained inconsistent and that many included studies had methodological limitations.
The simplest takeaway
Arch support may improve comfort when it addresses a relevant support or loading issue, but the right amount and design of support matter more than simply choosing the most supportive insole.
Foot comfort is more than simply having a soft shoe.
It can involve how comfortable your feet feel during:
Walking
Standing
Running
Exercising
Working
Wearing shoes for extended periods
Repeated weight-bearing
Comfort can be influenced by several factors, including:
Plantar pressure
Pressure distribution
Foot mechanics
Shoe fit
Cushioning
Arch support
Heel support
Surface firmness
Activity level
Individual foot structure
This is why arch support and foot comfort should not be treated as exactly the same thing.
Arch support is one component of footwear and insole design that may influence comfort; it is not the only factor responsible for how comfortable a shoe feels.
Arch support can potentially influence comfort through several mechanisms.
1. Redistributing plantar pressure
The sole of the foot does not experience pressure uniformly.
Different regions including the heel, midfoot and forefoot-experience different loads during standing and movement.
Foot orthoses can alter how these loads are distributed. A systematic review of orthotic materials found that polyurethane, polyethylene and EVA materials reduced peak plantar pressure beneath certain regions of the foot in laboratory walking studies, although the review noted that the evidence was limited and the studies were heterogeneous.
A 2026 systematic review similarly found reductions in peak plantar pressure and/or pressure-time integral across all included studies, although the researchers noted substantial clinical and methodological differences between studies.
This does not mean that reducing pressure everywhere is necessarily better. The goal is appropriate load distribution, not simply minimum pressure.
2. Changing the foot-insole interface
An arch support insole changes the shape of the surface against which the foot rests.
Instead of relying entirely on a relatively flat shoe footbed, a contoured insole can provide additional contact beneath the arch.
This may change:
Contact area
Pressure distribution
Loading patterns
Foot movement
Perceived support
Research on different foot-orthosis designs has found that arch-supported and arch-and-heel-supported orthoses can influence gait mechanics, although effects vary by design and are not always large or clinically significant.
3. Potentially reducing fatigue in some situations
Foot comfort isn't only about pain.
Some people describe their feet as:
Tired
Heavy
Aching
Fatigued
Uncomfortable after prolonged walking or standing
A 2025 study specifically investigated arch-support insoles and lower-extremity muscle fatigue during walking in people with flat feet. The researchers found reductions in fatigue-related measures for some muscles during uphill and downhill walking compared with flat insoles.
The study was small-15 female college students with flat feet-so it should not be generalized to everyone. But it provides useful evidence that arch support can affect fatigue-related outcomes under particular conditions.
The evidence suggests that arch support can produce measurable biomechanical effects, and some studies report improvements in comfort or symptoms. But “works” does not mean that it works equally well for everyone or for every problem.
Research provides evidence that foot orthoses can:
Alter plantar-pressure distribution
Increase or change foot contact patterns
Influence aspects of gait
Affect lower-limb mechanics
Improve perceived comfort in some study populations
Reduce some measures of muscle fatigue in specific situations
For example, a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that arch-support orthoses reduced peak plantar pressure in several regions during running and reported improved perceived comfort with custom orthoses.
At the same time, other systematic reviews have highlighted limitations in the evidence, including small samples, heterogeneous interventions and inconsistent clinical outcomes.
Therefore, a scientifically accurate answer is:
Arch support can work, but its effects depend on the person, the design of the support and the outcome being measured.
Research on arch support generally falls into several categories.
Biomechanical research
Studies measure things such as:
Plantar pressure
Ground-reaction forces
Foot contact area
Joint movement
Gait
Muscle activity
These studies can show how an insole changes the mechanics of walking or running, but a biomechanical change does not automatically mean that a person will feel more comfortable.
Comfort research
Some studies ask participants to rate:
Comfort
Perceived support
Effort
Fatigue
Discomfort
The 2024 meta-analysis of foot orthoses during running found a significant improvement in perceived comfort with custom foot orthoses compared with controls.
Clinical research
Clinical studies may evaluate:
Pain
Function
Walking ability
Quality of life
Symptoms over time
Results can be more mixed.
For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis of foot orthoses for plantar heel pain found moderate-quality evidence of reduced pain in the medium term, but the authors noted uncertainty about whether the size of the improvement was clinically important.
A newer 2026 meta-analysis of randomized trials in plantar fasciitis similarly found that foot orthoses reduced pain but did not find significant improvements in foot function or walking ability.
This is why arch support effectiveness should be discussed in terms of specific outcomes rather than as a blanket claim.
No.
There is no strong evidence that everyone needs arch support or that adding arch support will automatically make every person's feet more comfortable.
People differ in:
Arch height
Foot shape
Gait
Activity
Footwear
Symptoms
Tolerance of different insole materials
Support preferences
Even two people with similar arch types may respond differently to the same insole.
A systematic review of adults with flat feet concluded that evidence for foot orthoses was inconsistent and noted that many studies had low methodological quality.
This reinforces an important principle:
The goal should be appropriate support-not maximum support.
It may, particularly in certain people and activities, but the evidence is still developing.
A 2025 study examined 15 people with flat feet during walking and found that arch-support insoles reduced fatigue-related measures in certain lower-extremity muscles during uphill and downhill walking compared with flat insoles.
This provides direct evidence relevant to the question “can arch support reduce foot fatigue?”, but the study was small and specific to people with flat feet.
Therefore, it would be inappropriate to conclude that arch support universally prevents tired feet.
Instead:
Arch support may help reduce fatigue-related loading in some situations, but individual response depends on foot structure, activity and insole design.
It can potentially help some people, particularly when discomfort or fatigue is related to how the foot is being loaded during prolonged activity.
However, tired feet can have many causes, including:
Long periods of standing
Excessive walking
Unsuitable footwear
Poor shoe fit
Hard walking surfaces
Insufficient recovery
Changes in activity
Existing foot problems
Therefore, arch support should be considered as one possible component of a broader approach to foot comfort, rather than a guaranteed solution.
It can for some people, but the evidence is not strong enough to say that arch support universally improves walking comfort.
Foot orthoses can alter plantar pressure and gait mechanics during walking. Research has demonstrated changes in pressure distribution and foot contact patterns with different orthotic designs.
However, measurable biomechanical changes and perceived comfort are not always the same thing.
An insole may alter pressure distribution without making a person feel more comfortable.
Conversely, an insole that feels comfortable may not produce dramatic biomechanical changes.
This is why both objective measurements and patient-reported comfort matter when evaluating arch-support effectiveness.
Potentially, but evidence specifically focused on standing comfort is more limited than evidence concerning plantar pressure and gait.
Standing places prolonged load on the feet, and an appropriately designed insole may alter how that load is distributed.
If you spend long periods standing, consider the complete footwear system:
Arch support
Cushioning
Heel structure
Shoe fit
Footbed shape
Surface firmness
Time spent standing
A very soft insole is not necessarily the best solution, just as the firmest arch support is not automatically the best.
There is evidence that foot orthoses can change plantar pressure and certain biomechanical variables during running.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 35 studies found that both custom and off-the-shelf arch-support orthoses reduced peak plantar pressure at several heel and forefoot locations. The review also found improved perceived comfort with custom orthoses compared with controls.
However, the same research found some trade-offs, including changes in running economy and perceived exertion with custom orthoses.
So the answer isn't simply:
“More arch support is better for runners.”
Instead:
“The design of the support matters, and its effects can differ between individuals and running conditions.”
No.
This is one of the most important distinctions when choosing arch-support products.
A higher or firmer arch does not automatically provide greater comfort.
Comfort depends on:
The shape of the support
Its position under the foot
Material stiffness
Foot shape
Shoe fit
Activity
Individual tolerance
An arch support that is too prominent for a particular foot may feel intrusive rather than comfortable.
Therefore:
The objective is not maximum arch support. The objective is appropriate arch support.
Yes.
Comfort and softness are not identical.
A supportive insole can feel comfortable because it provides a better-contoured interface with the foot, even if it is not extremely soft.
Similarly, a very soft insole can feel comfortable initially but may not provide the type of structural support a person is looking for.
This is why comfortable arch support should be evaluated as a combination of:
fit + contour + support + cushioning + footwear + activity.
If your objective is improved foot comfort, evaluate the entire insole rather than focusing on a single specification.
1. Appropriate arch contour
The support should interact comfortably with your arch rather than creating excessive localized pressure.
2. Suitable firmness
Arch support can range from relatively soft to firm. The right level depends on the individual and the design.
3. Adequate cushioning
Cushioning can complement structural support by improving the underfoot feel.
4. Correct fit
An insole that does not fit properly inside the shoe can create pressure or reduce available shoe volume.
5. Appropriate footwear
Even a well-designed insole may not perform well if the shoe is too narrow, too short or otherwise poorly suited to the foot.
6. Your activity
Walking, running, standing and exercise create different loading patterns.
7. Your individual response
Comfort is ultimately personal. An insole that works well for one person may not feel the same to another.
Arch support is only one part of the equation.
Cushioning
Cushioning can influence underfoot softness and impact attenuation.
Shoe fit
A shoe that is too tight, too loose or too short can cause discomfort regardless of the quality of its insole.
Footwear structure
Heel stability, outsole construction and overall shoe geometry can influence comfort.
Activity
The demands of walking, running, standing and exercise differ.
Surface
Walking on hard floors can feel different from walking on softer surfaces.
Foot structure
Arch height and overall foot shape can affect how an individual interacts with footwear.
This is why foot comfort insoles should be evaluated based on the complete design rather than a single marketing feature.
One of the most useful ways to understand the relationship between arch support and comfort is through plantar pressure.
When the foot contacts the ground, force is distributed across different areas of the sole.
An insole can change:
Where pressure occurs
How much pressure occurs
How long pressure is applied
The area over which the load is distributed
Research has found that different orthotic materials can reduce peak plantar pressure in specific regions.
A 2026 systematic review found that all included studies reported reductions in peak plantar pressure and/or pressure-time integral with the foot orthoses studied, although the researchers emphasized heterogeneity and an evidence gap around certain orthotic designs.
However, lower pressure does not automatically equal greater comfort.
The relationship between biomechanics and subjective comfort is more complicated.
This distinction is important when interpreting arch support research.
Biomechanical evidence asks:
“What changed mechanically?”
Researchers may measure:
Plantar pressure
Ground-reaction forces
Joint angles
Muscle activity
Contact area
Gait variables
Comfort evidence asks:
“How did the person feel?”
Researchers may measure:
Perceived comfort
Pain
Fatigue
Discomfort
Perceived exertion
Function
An intervention can produce a measurable biomechanical change without producing a meaningful improvement in how someone feels.
For this reason, a strong evidence-based discussion should consider both mechanical and patient-reported outcomes.
What Does the Evidence Actually Tell Us?
Taken together, current evidence supports several cautious conclusions.
What the evidence supports?
1. Foot orthoses can change plantar-pressure distribution.
Multiple studies and reviews have demonstrated changes in plantar pressure with orthotic interventions.
2. Arch-support orthoses can alter aspects of foot and lower-limb mechanics.
Systematic reviews have found changes in gait and lower-limb kinetics and kinematics with different orthotic designs.
3. Some studies report improved perceived comfort.
The 2024 meta-analysis found increased perceived comfort with custom foot orthoses during running compared with controls.
4. Arch-support insoles may influence fatigue in specific populations.
A 2025 study found reduced fatigue-related measures during certain walking conditions in people with flat feet.
What the evidence does not establish?
1. Everyone needs arch support.
The evidence does not support a universal recommendation.
2. More support is always better.
Insole effects depend on design and individual response.
3. Arch support guarantees pain relief.
Clinical outcomes vary, and some reviews find only modest or uncertain effects.
4. Arch support prevents injuries in everyone.
Biomechanical changes should not automatically be interpreted as injury prevention.
The answer depends on what outcome you are asking about.
Question | What the evidence suggests |
Can orthoses change plantar pressure? | Yes, evidence supports this. |
Can arch support change foot mechanics? | Yes, but effects vary by design. |
Can arch support improve perceived comfort? | Some evidence supports this. |
Can arch support reduce fatigue? | Promising evidence in specific populations, but limited. |
Does arch support help everyone? | No evidence for a universal benefit. |
Does more support mean more comfort? | No. |
Does arch support guarantee pain relief? | No. |
Does every person need arch support? | No. |
This is a more useful interpretation of the scientific evidence for arch support than simply describing arch support as either “good” or “bad.”
Consider:
Does walking feel more comfortable?
Do your feet feel less tired after prolonged activity?
Does the support feel natural rather than intrusive?
Does the insole fit properly inside the shoe?
Do you experience any new pressure points?
Does comfort improve as you become accustomed to the insole?
A short adjustment period can occur when changing footwear or insoles, but persistent or significant pain should not simply be ignored.
If an insole consistently causes discomfort, reassess its fit, design and suitability rather than assuming that greater discomfort means greater therapeutic benefit.
Who May Want to Consider Arch Support?
Arch support may be worth considering if you:
Want additional support beneath the arch
Experience foot fatigue during prolonged activity
Want to experiment with a more structured insole
Have a foot structure for which support has been recommended
Want an insole that combines structural support with cushioning
However, people with persistent or significant foot pain should consider professional assessment rather than relying solely on an insole.
When Should Foot Discomfort Be Professionally Assessed?
Foot discomfort can have many causes.
Consider seeking professional advice if:
Pain is persistent or worsening
Pain follows an injury
You have significant swelling
You have numbness or tingling
You have difficulty walking normally
Symptoms repeatedly return despite changes in footwear
You have a known foot or lower-limb condition
A new insole causes significant or persistent pain
Arch support should complement appropriate care, not replace diagnosis when a medical problem may be present.
Arch Support and Foot Comfort: The Bottom Line
Can arch support improve foot comfort?
For some people, yes.
The evidence shows that foot orthoses and arch-support designs can change plantar-pressure distribution and aspects of foot mechanics. Some research also reports improvements in perceived comfort, while newer research suggests that arch-support insoles may reduce certain measures of muscle fatigue in people with flat feet during specific walking tasks.
But the evidence is not a reason to assume that everyone needs arch support.
The most accurate conclusion is:
Arch support can contribute to foot comfort when its design, fit and level of support are appropriate for the individual. Comfort depends on much more than arch support alone, and more support is not necessarily better.
Think of arch support as one part of a complete foot-comfort system that also includes shoe fit, cushioning, footwear design, activity, foot structure and individual preference.
