What Is a High Foot Arch? Causes, Symptoms & Support Options

What Is a High Foot Arch?

A high foot arch is an arch along the inside of the foot that is more pronounced or elevated than usual.

The main arch involved is the medial longitudinal arch, which runs along the inside of the foot from the heel toward the toes.

When you stand, a high arch generally leaves less of the midfoot in contact with the ground compared with a low arch.

In medical terminology, a high-arched foot is commonly referred to as pes cavus. MedlinePlus defines a high arch as a foot arch that is raised more than normal and lists pes cavus as an alternative name.

High Arch Meaning in Simple Terms

In simple terms:

A high foot arch means the inside arch of your foot is relatively elevated, creating less midfoot contact with the ground when you stand.

The important point is that arch height alone doesn't determine whether a foot is healthy or problematic.

A person can have naturally high arches and walk, exercise and participate in sports without significant symptoms.

What Is a High-Arched Foot?

A high-arched foot is simply a foot with an unusually pronounced longitudinal arch.

You may notice that:

• The inside of your foot appears noticeably curved.

• Less of the middle of the foot contacts the ground.

• Your instep may look more pronounced.

• Your heel and forefoot may carry a greater proportion of your body weight.

• Some shoes may feel tight across the top or difficult to fit comfortably.

MedlinePlus notes that when a person with a high arch stands, the instep can look hollow and more weight may be carried toward the heel and ball of the foot.

However, appearance alone cannot determine whether you have a clinically significant high arch.

What Is Pes Cavus?

Pes cavus is the medical term commonly used for a high-arched foot.

The terms high arch, high-arched foot, cavus foot and pes cavus are therefore closely related.

However, medical assessment of a cavus foot involves more than simply looking at arch height. Clinicians may also consider the position of the heel, forefoot alignment, flexibility, muscle balance, gait and the presence of symptoms.

Research on cavovarus foot anatomy describes a high longitudinal plantar arch as one of the characteristic features of a cavovarus deformity, along with other alignment changes.

Is Every High Arch a Cavus Foot?

Not necessarily in the sense of a problematic deformity.

A person can naturally have a high arch without significant symptoms.

The term pes cavus is often used broadly for high-arched feet, but a clinician may distinguish between a simple high arch and a more complex cavus/cavovarus deformity depending on the person's structure and symptoms.

What Does a High Arch Look Like?

A high arch is generally easier to see when you are standing.

You may notice:

• A pronounced curve along the inside of the foot

• A narrow-looking midfoot

• Less midfoot contact with the ground

• A prominent instep

• More pressure toward the heel and forefoot

A footprint may also show a relatively narrow connection between the heel and forefoot.

However, a footprint is only a general indicator of foot structure. It shouldn't be treated as a medical diagnosis.

If you want to understand how to identify your general arch type, see: How to Tell What Type of Foot Arch You Have

What Causes High Foot Arches?

There isn't one single cause of high arches.

Some high arches are simply part of a person's natural foot structure. Others can be associated with inherited, orthopedic or neurological conditions.

1. Natural or Inherited Foot Structure

Some people naturally have high arches.

Foot structure varies significantly between individuals, and a high arch can remain stable throughout life without causing symptoms.

If your high arches have always been present and you have no pain or functional limitations, the arch shape itself may not require treatment.

2. Genetic Factors

Some forms of high arch can run in families.

A family history of high arches may therefore be relevant when assessing an individual's foot structure.

However, genetics is not the only potential explanation for a high arch.

3. Neurological Conditions

Some cases of high arch can be associated with neurological conditions that affect muscle balance or nerve function.

MedlinePlus notes that high foot arches can be caused by bone or neurological conditions.

This does not mean that having high arches means you have a neurological disorder.

Instead, a high arch that develops or progressively changes—particularly when accompanied by weakness, muscle imbalance, numbness or other neurological symptoms—may deserve professional evaluation.

4. Bone or Orthopedic Conditions

Changes in the bones or alignment of the foot can also contribute to a high arch or cavus-type foot structure.

The underlying cause is important because treatment depends on why the arch is high.

5. Changes Developing Over Time

Some high arches are noticed later in life rather than being obvious from childhood.

A newly developing or progressively changing arch should be assessed in context, particularly if it is associated with pain, weakness, instability or differences between the two feet.

What Are the Symptoms of High Arches?

Not everyone with high arches has symptoms.

When symptoms occur, they can include:

• Foot pain

• Arch discomfort

• Heel pain

• Pain under the ball of the foot

• Foot fatigue

• Difficulty finding comfortable shoes

• Calluses caused by pressure

• Ankle instability

• Recurrent ankle sprains

• Difficulty walking or running comfortably

MedlinePlus lists difficulty fitting shoes and foot pain during walking, standing or running among possible symptoms of high arches, while noting that not everyone experiences pain.

The exact symptoms depend on the person's foot structure, activity, footwear and underlying cause.

Why Can High Arches Cause Foot Pain?

One reason high arches can become uncomfortable is that they can change how forces are distributed across the foot.

A high arch generally provides less midfoot contact with the ground. This can concentrate loading toward other areas of the foot.

For example, Mayo Clinic notes that a high arch can put extra pressure on the metatarsals and contribute to metatarsalgia.

Research examining plantar pressure has also found that cavus feet can show higher peak pressure and pressure-time loading in areas including the heel and lateral forefoot, with lower midfoot contact characteristics compared with other foot postures.

This helps explain why someone with a high arch may experience discomfort even though the arch itself isn't necessarily “injured.”

Can High Arches Cause Ball-of-Foot Pain?

They can be associated with ball-of-foot pain.

The ball of the foot contains the metatarsal heads, which help transfer load during walking and running.

A high arch can place additional pressure on this area.

Mayo Clinic specifically identifies a high arch as one factor that can put extra pressure on the metatarsals and contribute to metatarsalgia.

Symptoms may feel like:

• Aching under the forefoot

• Burning

• Sharp pain

• Pain that increases during walking or running

• Discomfort after prolonged standing

However, forefoot pain has many potential causes, so it shouldn't automatically be attributed to a high arch.

Can High Arches Cause Heel Pain?

They can be associated with heel discomfort, although heel pain has many possible causes.

Research involving people with painful idiopathic pes cavus has found pain in both forefoot and rear-foot regions.

High arches can also be one of the foot-structure factors associated with plantar fasciitis. MedlinePlus lists both flat feet and high arches among foot arch problems that can increase the likelihood of plantar fasciitis.

If heel pain persists, particularly if it is severe or interferes with walking, it's better to investigate the cause rather than assume that your arch shape is responsible.

Can High Arches Cause Plantar Fasciitis?

High arches can be associated with plantar fasciitis, but they don't automatically cause it.

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue along the bottom of the foot that helps support the arch.

MedlinePlus lists both high arches and flat feet among foot arch problems associated with plantar fasciitis. Other factors include activity level, running, tight calf muscles and footwear.

If you want to understand arch support more broadly, see: What Does Arch Support Do? Benefits, Uses & Who Needs It

Can High Arches Cause Ankle Problems?

High arches can be associated with changes in foot and ankle mechanics.

Some people with high-arched feet may experience:

• Ankle instability

• Recurrent ankle sprains

• Difficulty maintaining balance

• Uneven loading during walking

However, not everyone with high arches experiences these issues.

The relationship between foot posture and lower-limb movement is complex. Research has examined how different foot postures, including cavus and planus feet, relate to lower-limb kinematics.

High Arches and Supination: Is There a Connection?

A high arch is sometimes associated with a tendency toward supination, also described in some contexts as underpronation.

Supination refers to a combination of movements involving the foot and ankle that can make the foot more rigid and reduce inward movement.

However, arch height alone does not tell you exactly how your foot moves.

Two people with similarly high arches can have different movement patterns.

Therefore, it is better to think of supination as a potential biomechanical association rather than a guaranteed consequence of having high arches.

Do High Arches Affect Pressure Distribution?

Yes, high arches can be associated with different plantar-pressure patterns.

A systematic review found that cavus feet tend to show higher peak pressure and pressure-time loading in the heel and lateral forefoot, while midfoot contact characteristics are lower.

This provides a useful way to understand high arches:

Higher arch → less midfoot contact → potentially greater loading elsewhere

But the relationship is not identical for every person.

Foot flexibility, body weight, footwear, activity, gait pattern and other anatomical factors can all influence pressure distribution.

Do High Arches Have Less Shock Absorption?

A high arch is generally more rigid than a very low or flexible arch, but it would be too simplistic to say that every high arch automatically has poor shock absorption.

What matters is how the entire foot functions.

A high arch may reduce the amount of midfoot contact and can be associated with altered loading patterns. This is one reason cushioning and appropriate footwear can be relevant for some people with symptomatic high arches.

For a broader explanation of the difference between support and cushioning, see:Arch Support vs Cushioning: What's the Difference?

How Do You Know If You Have High Arches?

There are several ways to get an initial indication of your arch type.

1. Look at Your Foot While Standing

Stand naturally and look at the inside of your foot.

A pronounced, elevated arch with relatively little midfoot contact may suggest a high arch.

2. Check Your Footprint

A wet-foot test can provide a general indication of your arch type.

A footprint with a narrow connection between the heel and forefoot can suggest a higher arch.

However, don't use a footprint alone to diagnose a foot condition.

Read:Wet Foot Test: How to Check Your Arch Type at Home

3. Compare Both Feet

Check both feet separately.

Your feet don't necessarily have identical structures.

A significant difference between the two feet—especially if it has developed recently—can be more important than simply having high arches on both sides.

4. Use a More Detailed Measurement

If you want to investigate your arch structure more systematically, you can use an arch measurement method.

Read: How to Measure Your Foot Arch at Home

Remember that at-home tests provide an indication rather than a medical diagnosis.

High Arch vs Low Arch vs Normal Arch

Foot arches are often broadly described as low, medium/neutral or high.

Importantly, none of these categories automatically means healthy or unhealthy.

If you want to explore the differences in detail, see: Normal Arch vs Low Arch vs High Arch: What's the Difference?

For the broader classification: What Are the Different Types of Foot Arches?

Do High Arches Need Arch Support?

Not automatically.

If you have high arches but no pain or functional problems, you may not need additional arch support simply because your arches are high.

If you experience discomfort, however, supportive footwear, cushioning or an appropriately designed insole may be worth considering.

MedlinePlus notes that high arches—particularly flexible or well-managed high arches—may not require treatment, while orthotics and supportive insoles can help relieve symptoms when treatment is needed.

The goal is therefore not:

“Make every high arch flatter.”

Instead, the goal is:

Support comfortable and efficient foot function.

Is Arch Support Good for High Arches?

It can be helpful for some people, but the right amount and shape of support is individual.

An arch-support product can change the way the foot interfaces with the shoe and can provide additional support under the arch.

However, a high arch already has a pronounced structure, so adding an excessively aggressive arch contour may not necessarily feel comfortable.

When considering an arch-support product, look at:

• Overall comfort

• Arch shape

• Pressure distribution

• Shoe fit

• Activity

• Cushioning

• How your feet respond over time

For a broader explanation of when arch support may be useful: Do You Need Arch Support? Signs You May Benefit From It

Do High Arches Need Cushioning?

Cushioning can be particularly relevant for some people with high arches, especially when pressure under the heel or forefoot is uncomfortable.

This is because high-arched feet can show different plantar-pressure patterns, including greater pressure/loading in certain regions.

But cushioning and arch support serve different purposes.

Arch support

Generally aims to provide contact and support around the arch.

Cushioning

Generally aims to reduce the sensation of impact and pressure and improve comfort.

A person with high arches may benefit from one, the other or a combination depending on their individual needs.

For the detailed distinction: Arch Support vs Cushioning: What's the Difference?

What Shoes Are Best for High Arches?

There isn't one universally best shoe for everyone with high arches.

Instead, look for footwear that:

Provides enough cushioning

If you experience pressure under the heel or forefoot, cushioning may improve comfort.

Fits the shape of your foot

High arches can make certain shoes feel tight across the instep.

MedlinePlus notes that high arches can make it difficult to fit comfortably into shoes.

Has adequate forefoot room

A shoe shouldn't squeeze the toes or create unnecessary pressure around the ball of the foot.

Provides appropriate stability

The shoe should feel stable during the activity you perform.

Works with your insole

If you use an arch-support or cushioned insole, make sure the shoe has enough internal volume to accommodate it without creating excessive pressure.

Are Insoles Good for High Arches?

They can be useful for some people with symptomatic high arches.

The appropriate insole depends on what you are trying to address.

For example:

• An arch-support insole may provide additional support.

• A cushioned insole may improve comfort under pressure-sensitive areas.

• A combination product may address both support and cushioning.

MedlinePlus notes that orthotics placed inside shoes may help symptoms associated with high arches.

However, an insole should not be chosen solely because an online test says you have a high arch.

Symptoms, comfort and shoe fit matter too.

Can High Arches Be Corrected?

That depends on what is causing the high arch.

If your high arch is simply your natural foot structure and doesn't cause symptoms, there may be nothing that needs to be corrected.

If it is associated with an underlying condition, treatment is directed toward the specific problem.

MedlinePlus notes that treatment for high arches depends on severity and cause, with options ranging from footwear and orthotics to more advanced treatment in severe cases.

Therefore, avoid thinking about a high arch as something that automatically needs to be “fixed.”

The more useful question is:

Is the high arch causing pain, limiting activity or associated with an underlying condition?

Can High Arches Get Worse?

They can change over time, although the course varies substantially between individuals.

A high arch that has been stable for years without symptoms is different from a high arch that appears to be progressively changing.

If you notice:

• A newly developing high arch

• A major difference between your feet

• Increasing pain

• Weakness

• Numbness

• Recurrent ankle instability

• Changes in walking ability

consider getting a professional assessment.

This is particularly important because some high-arch patterns can be associated with neurological or structural conditions.

Can High Arches Cause Calluses?

They can contribute to areas of increased pressure that may lead to callus formation.

Calluses are areas of thickened skin that develop in response to repeated pressure or friction.

A high arch can alter how weight is distributed across the foot, potentially increasing pressure in certain areas.

However, calluses also have many other causes, including footwear fit and activity.

So a callus doesn't automatically mean you have high arches.

Can High Arches Cause Ankle Sprains?

A high-arched or cavus-type foot can be associated with altered foot and ankle mechanics, and some people with cavus foot experience ankle instability or recurrent sprains.

But having high arches does not guarantee that you'll sprain your ankle.

Your overall foot alignment, muscle control, balance, footwear and activity all matter.

If you repeatedly sprain the same ankle, it is worth addressing the underlying instability rather than simply assuming your arch shape is responsible.

High Arches and Running

Many people with high arches run without problems.

However, high arches can influence how load is distributed during running.

Running increases repetitive loading compared with ordinary walking, so discomfort may become more noticeable during:

• Long-distance running

• Sprinting

• Jumping

• High-intensity workouts

• Sudden increases in training volume

If running repeatedly causes pain, don't assume that changing to a particular arch-support product is the only solution.

Consider the full picture:

Footwear + training load + running surface + recovery + biomechanics + individual foot structure

If pain persists, professional assessment can help identify the cause.

High Arches and Walking

High arches can influence walking mechanics and plantar-pressure distribution.

Research indicates that cavus feet can demonstrate differences in pressure distribution compared with other foot postures.

Some people notice no difference at all.

Others may experience:

• Foot fatigue

• Forefoot discomfort

• Heel discomfort

• Reduced comfort during long walks

• Shoe-fitting problems

If your feet are comfortable during walking, having a high arch by itself does not mean you need to change your walking style.

When Should You See a Doctor About High Arches?

A stable, naturally high arch without symptoms may not require medical treatment.

Consider professional assessment if you experience:

• Persistent foot pain

• Pain that limits walking or exercise

• Recurrent ankle sprains

• Significant difficulty fitting shoes

• A high arch that develops or changes noticeably over time

• Weakness

• Numbness or tingling

• A major difference between your two feet

• Difficulty walking

• Symptoms following an injury

MedlinePlus recommends contacting a healthcare provider if you think your foot pain is related to high arches.

Persistent foot pain can have many causes, so it is better to identify the underlying cause rather than assuming the arch is responsible.

How Is a High Arch Diagnosed?

A healthcare professional may assess:

• Your foot while standing

• Your foot while walking

• Arch height

• Foot flexibility

• Heel alignment

• Forefoot alignment

• Muscle strength

• Neurological function

• Areas of pain or pressure

Depending on the situation, additional tests may be used.

MedlinePlus lists possible investigations for high arches including foot X-rays and, where clinically appropriate, neurological tests such as electromyography, nerve-conduction studies or imaging.

These tests aren't necessary for everyone with a high arch.

The appropriate assessment depends on symptoms and the suspected cause.

High Foot Arch: Support Checklist

If you have high arches and experience discomfort, consider these factors:

1. Check your footwear

Make sure your shoes fit the length, width and instep of your foot.

2. Look at cushioning

If you experience pressure under the heel or forefoot, cushioning may improve comfort.

3. Consider arch support

An appropriately shaped arch-support product may help some people.

4. Avoid excessive pressure

An insole shouldn't create painful pressure under your arch.

5. Consider your activity

Walking, running, standing and sports can place different demands on your feet.

6. Monitor symptoms

If pain persists or progressively worsens, seek professional assessment.

High Arch vs Low Arch: What's the Difference?

The biggest structural difference is where and how much of the foot contacts the ground.

A low arch generally has greater midfoot contact.

A high arch generally has less midfoot contact.

These differences can influence plantar-pressure distribution, although the exact pattern varies from person to person. Research has found distinctive pressure patterns associated with cavus and planus foot postures.

For the complete comparison, see: Normal Arch vs Low Arch vs High Arch: What's the Difference?

High Arch vs Flat Feet

High arches and flat feet represent opposite ends of the broad arch-height spectrum.

High arch:
More pronounced arch and generally less midfoot contact.

Flat/low arch:
Reduced arch and generally greater midfoot contact during weight-bearing.

MedlinePlus describes high arch as the opposite of flat feet.

However, neither structure automatically means that a person has pain or needs treatment.

The Bottom Line: Are High Arches a Problem?

Not necessarily.

A high foot arch is primarily a description of foot structure.

Some people naturally have high arches and have no problems. Others may experience discomfort because of how pressure is distributed across the foot, how shoes fit, or because of an underlying structural or neurological condition.

The key distinction is:

High arch + no symptoms → may simply be your natural foot structure.

High arch + persistent pain or functional problems → worth assessing further.

High arches don't automatically mean you need arch support, cushioning, orthotics or special footwear.

But if you experience discomfort, the combination of appropriate footwear, cushioning, support and—when necessary—professional assessment may help you stay comfortable and active.
