About
Want to know what type of foot arch you have without visiting a clinic? The wet foot test is one of the simplest ways to check your arch type at home.
The method is straightforward: wet the sole of your bare foot, step naturally onto a piece of paper or cardboard, and examine the footprint you leave behind. The amount of your midfoot that appears in the footprint can provide a general indication of whether you have a low, neutral or high arch. Mayo Clinic Health System describes this same approach as a simple way to determine your foot arch type.
However, a wet footprint is best viewed as a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Foot type can be assessed in several ways, and research has found that different assessment methods do not always produce identical classifications.
In this guide, you'll learn:
What the wet foot test is How to do the wet footprint test correctly What your footprint can tell you about your arch What low, neutral and high arch footprints look like How to interpret your wet footprint Whether the wet foot test can identify flat feet How accurate the wet footprint test is What to do after discovering your arch type
The wet foot test, also called the wet footprint test, is a simple at-home method for getting a general idea of your foot arch type.
You wet the bottom of your bare foot and step onto a surface that records your footprint. You then examine the amount of contact visible through the middle portion of your foot.
The basic idea is:
More midfoot contact generally suggests a lower arch.
Moderate midfoot contact generally suggests a neutral or medium arch.
Less midfoot contact generally suggests a higher arch.
Mayo Clinic Health System uses a similar footprint-based approach, describing approximately half-filled midfoot contact as a neutral arch, a footprint resembling the entire foot as a low arch, and very little visible footprint as a high arch.
The test is popular because it requires almost no equipment and can be performed in a few minutes.
You don't need specialized equipment.
Gather:
A shallow container or tray of water
A piece of plain cardboard, thick paper or another surface that shows a footprint clearly
A towel
Bare feet
A flat, non-slip surface
For a clearer result, use a surface that doesn't absorb the water immediately.
A piece of cardboard can work particularly well because it can preserve the outline of your footprint long enough to examine it.
Follow these steps to get a useful footprint.
Step 1: Choose a Flat Surface
Place your cardboard or paper on a hard, level surface.
Avoid thick carpets or uneven flooring because they can distort the footprint.
Step 2: Remove Your Shoes and Socks
Perform the test barefoot.
Your socks can absorb moisture and alter the footprint, while shoes obviously change the way your foot contacts the surface.
Step 3: Wet the Bottom of Your Foot
Place one foot briefly in the water.
You want the sole to be wet enough to leave a visible footprint.
You don't need your entire foot dripping wet.
Step 4: Step Naturally Onto the Paper
Place your wet foot directly onto the cardboard or paper.
Stand normally for a moment.
Don't deliberately:
Flatten your foot
Lift your heel
Push your toes down
Roll your foot outward
Roll your foot inward
The objective is to capture your natural weight-bearing footprint.
Step 5: Lift Your Foot Straight Up
Carefully lift your foot away from the surface.
Avoid sliding or twisting your foot because this can smear the footprint.
Step 6: Examine the Footprint
Look at the area between the heel and the ball of the foot.
This is the key part of the footprint for a basic arch-type assessment.
Step 7: Repeat With the Other Foot
Test both feet separately.
Don't assume your left and right feet will produce identical footprints.
The most important part of the wet foot test is interpreting the amount of midfoot contact.
As a general guide:
| Wet footprint appearance | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Most of the foot appears, including a broad midfoot | Low arch / flat-looking footprint |
| Roughly moderate midfoot contact | Neutral or medium arch |
| Very little midfoot contact | High arch |
This is a general screening interpretation, not a diagnostic classification.
Low Arch or Flat-Looking Footprint
A footprint that shows a broad area of the midfoot may indicate a low arch.
In a very low or flat-looking footprint, the outline can appear close to the shape of the entire sole.
Mayo Clinic Health System describes a footprint that looks like a complete foot as consistent with a flat/low arch.
However, a footprint alone does not establish that you have a medical condition called flat feet.
Cleveland Clinic notes that flexible flat feet can show an arch when the foot isn't bearing weight but appear flattened when standing, while rigid flat feet remain flat in both situations.
Neutral or Medium Arch Footprint
A neutral or medium arch generally produces a footprint with some but not all of the midfoot visible.
Mayo Clinic Health System describes approximately half of the middle portion being filled as a general indication of a neutral arch.
Think of it as a visible inward curve through the middle of the footprint, without the midfoot being either almost completely absent or almost completely filled.
High Arch Footprint
A high arch generally produces less midfoot contact.
As a result, the footprint may show:
A clear gap through the middle
Only a narrow connection between the heel and forefoot
Relatively little visible midfoot
Mayo Clinic Health System describes very little visible footprint through the middle as a general indication of a high arch.
A wet footprint primarily gives you information about how much of your plantar surface contacts the supporting surface.
It can help you answer:
"Does my footprint look more consistent with a low, medium or high arch?"
It does not directly tell you:
Your exact arch height
Whether your feet are healthy or unhealthy
Whether you need arch support
Whether you have a specific foot disorder
How your foot behaves during every phase of walking
How your foot responds to different loads or activities
This distinction is important.
A footprint is one way of describing foot structure. Researchers have developed several other measurements, including the Arch Index, Arch Height Index, navicular height and other parameters.
No.
The wet foot test shows the contact pattern of your foot, not the vertical height of your arch.
For example, two people could have footprints with similar midfoot contact but different actual arch heights.
Research has examined the relationship between footprint measurements and other measures of arch structure. Footprint-based measures can correlate with arch characteristics, but they are not simply interchangeable with every direct measurement of arch height.
If you want to learn how to measure arch height rather than simply identify the footprint pattern, see our guide:
How to Measure Your Foot Arch at Home
A flat-looking footprint generally shows a large amount of the midfoot.
The inward curve normally associated with the arch may appear much smaller or may be difficult to see.
However, don't use the footprint alone to diagnose flat feet.
Cleveland Clinic distinguishes between flexible flat feet, where the arch may appear when the foot isn't bearing weight, and rigid flat feet, where the arch remains absent.
A simple wet footprint cannot make that distinction reliably.
A useful rule
Broad midfoot footprint = potentially lower arch
It does not automatically mean:
Broad midfoot footprint = medical problem
Many people have low arches without experiencing symptoms.
A high-arched footprint generally has less visible midfoot contact.
You may see:
A large gap through the middle
A thin connection between heel and forefoot
Mostly heel and forefoot contact
The less midfoot area visible in the footprint, the more the pattern generally resembles a high arch.
Again, this is a visual screening method rather than a clinical diagnosis.
A neutral or medium arch generally creates a footprint where the midfoot is partially visible but not completely filled.
A commonly used consumer interpretation is that roughly half of the midfoot region is represented in the footprint. Mayo Clinic Health System uses this approximate pattern when explaining its at-home arch test.
However, avoid treating "half" as a precise medical cutoff.
The appearance of a footprint can change depending on:
How much water is on your foot
How you stand
How much weight you place on the foot
The surface used
Foot positioning
The method used to classify the footprint
The answer depends on what you mean by accurate.
For a quick home screening
The wet footprint test can be useful.
It gives you a simple visual indication of how much of the midfoot contacts the surface.
For quantitative research
Footprint measurements can be made more objective.
One established measure is the Arch Index, which calculates the proportion of the footprint occupied by the middle third of the foot, excluding the toes. The original research describing the Arch Index reported high within-day and between-day reliability under its specified measurement conditions.
A systematic review also found that several footprint-based measurements can have high reliability, although methods and study conditions vary.
For medical diagnosis
A simple wet footprint should not be treated as a diagnostic test.
A systematic review found that there is no universally accepted standardized non-radiographic method for classifying all foot types, with differences in measurement methods and classification criteria affecting results.
More recent research has also found that agreement between visual/manual assessments and radiographic measures can vary considerably depending on methodology and classification thresholds.
So the best way to describe the wet foot test is:
A convenient at-home screening method, not a definitive clinical diagnosis.
If you want to go beyond simply looking at the footprint, you may come across the term Arch Index.
The Arch Index is a footprint-based measure that describes the proportion of the footprint occupied by the middle third of the foot, excluding the toes.
In simplified terms:
Arch Index = area of the middle third of the footprint ÷ total footprint area excluding the toes
This turns a visual footprint into a numerical measure.
Research has found that the Arch Index can correlate with other measures of foot arch structure.
However, you don't need to calculate the Arch Index to perform a basic wet foot test at home.
For most people, the visual result is enough to answer the initial question:
"Does my footprint look more like a low, medium or high arch?"
These two methods answer slightly different questions.
| Method | Main purpose |
|---|---|
| Wet footprint test | Examine midfoot contact |
| Footprint/Arch Index | Quantify footprint shape |
| Arch height measurement | Measure vertical arch dimension |
| Arch Height Index | Relate arch height to foot size |
| Clinical assessment | Evaluate foot structure and function more comprehensively |
So if your objective is “check my arch type”, the wet footprint test is a practical starting point.
If your objective is “measure my arch height”, use a dedicated arch-height measurement approach.
For the latter, read How to Measure Your Foot Arch at Home.
Yes.
Your feet don't necessarily have identical structure.
When performing the wet foot test, test your right and left feet separately.
You may notice differences in:
Midfoot contact
Arch appearance
Foot width
Foot length
How strongly the arch appears under load
A small difference does not automatically indicate a problem.
However, if you notice a substantial or newly developed difference accompanied by pain, swelling, weakness or difficulty walking, consider getting your feet evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
Your foot is a weight-bearing structure, so its appearance can change when you put body weight through it.
For example, someone with a flexible low arch may show a more visible arch when sitting but a much broader midfoot contact area while standing.
This is one reason why a wet footprint should be interpreted as a weight-bearing snapshot, rather than a complete description of your foot.
Cleveland Clinic notes this distinction when describing flexible flat feet: the arch can be visible when the foot isn't bearing weight but disappear when standing.
Several factors can influence the appearance of a footprint.
Amount of water
Too much water can create a blurry or oversized footprint.
Too little may leave an incomplete print.
How you stand
Leaning forward, shifting your weight or deliberately flattening the foot can change the footprint.
Surface
Paper, cardboard and other materials absorb water differently.
Foot position
Turning the foot inward or outward can alter the contact pattern.
Weight-bearing
Your footprint while standing can differ from an unloaded foot.
Individual anatomy
Foot structure naturally varies between people.
For these reasons, use the test to identify a general pattern, not an exact anatomical measurement.
For a more consistent home test:
Use the same type of paper/cardboard for both feet.
Use approximately the same amount of water.
Stand naturally.
Keep your weight evenly distributed.
Avoid intentionally flattening or raising your arch.
Test each foot separately.
Take a photograph of the result if you want to keep a record.
Repeat the test if the footprint is unclear.
If the result looks very different between two attempts, check your technique before drawing conclusions.
Mistake 1: Using too much water
An excessively wet foot can create a footprint that is difficult to interpret.
Better approach: Wet the sole evenly without leaving it dripping.
Mistake 2: Standing unnaturally
If you deliberately flatten your foot, you can artificially increase midfoot contact.
Better approach: Stand as you normally would.
Mistake 3: Sliding your foot
Sliding can smear the footprint and make the arch appear different.
Better approach: Step down and lift straight back up.
Mistake 4: Testing only one foot
Your feet can differ.
Better approach: Test both.
Mistake 5: Treating the result as a diagnosis
A footprint is not enough to diagnose a foot condition.
Better approach: Use it as an initial screening tool.
Mistake 6: Assuming low arch means you need support
Arch type alone doesn't determine whether someone needs a particular type of footwear or support.
Comfort, fit, symptoms and activity also matter. Mayo Clinic Health System specifically emphasizes comfort and fit when selecting athletic footwear rather than assuming one shoe is universally best for a particular foot type.
Not necessarily.
A wet footprint can indicate that you have a relatively low arch, but that doesn't automatically mean you need additional arch support.
Your footwear choices should also consider:
Comfort
Fit
Activity
Symptoms
Foot movement
Personal preference

Not automatically.
A high arch is a structural characteristic. It does not, by itself, tell you which shoe or support system will be most comfortable for you.
Mayo Clinic Health System notes that high-arched feet may have different shock-absorption characteristics, but also emphasizes comfort and proper fit when selecting footwear.
Your footwear needs depend on more than the appearance of your wet footprint.
The wet footprint test is only one method.
Visual inspection
You can look at your arch while standing and sitting.
Advantage: Very easy.
Limitation: Subjective.
Wet footprint
Shows how much of the foot contacts a surface.
Advantage: Simple and inexpensive.
Limitation: Doesn't directly measure arch height.
Arch height measurement
Measures the vertical dimension of the foot's arch.
Advantage: Provides a numerical measurement.
Limitation: Home measurements may be approximate.
Arch Index
Uses the footprint to create a numerical measure.
Advantage: More objective than simply looking at the footprint.
Limitation: Requires a suitable footprint and calculation method.
Professional assessment
A clinician can combine physical examination with appropriate measurements when needed.
Advantage: More comprehensive.
Limitation: Requires professional evaluation.
Research comparing non-radiographic foot-type methods suggests that several approaches can be reliable, but there is no single universally accepted method that perfectly captures every aspect of foot structure.
Your next step depends on what you're trying to learn.
If you simply want to know your general arch type

This creates a natural progression:
Test → Identify → Understand → Measure → Decide
A wet footprint can be useful for general education, but consider professional evaluation if you have:
Persistent foot pain
New or worsening arch pain
Significant swelling
Numbness or weakness
Difficulty walking
A noticeable change in your arch
A major difference between your feet
Symptoms following an injury
Pain that interferes with normal activities
A healthcare professional can assess your feet under different conditions and determine whether additional examination or testing is appropriate.
| Your footprint | General interpretation |
|---|---|
| Almost entire sole visible | Likely lower/flat-looking arch |
| Broad but incomplete midfoot | Relatively low to medium arch |
| Moderate midfoot contact | Neutral/medium arch pattern |
| Narrow midfoot connection | Relatively high arch |
| Very little midfoot contact | High arch pattern |
Remember: These are general visual guidelines, not diagnostic thresholds.
The exact classification can vary depending on the measurement method and criteria used. Research reviews have specifically highlighted differences between foot-type classification methods.
The wet foot test is a simple way to check your general arch type at home.
Here's what to remember:
Wet the sole of your bare foot.
Step naturally onto paper or cardboard.
Examine the amount of midfoot contact.
Broad midfoot contact generally suggests a lower arch.
Moderate contact generally suggests a neutral/medium arch.
Little midfoot contact generally suggests a higher arch.
Test both feet.
Don't deliberately flatten or raise your arch during the test.
A wet footprint does not directly measure arch height.
The test is a screening method, not a diagnosis.
If you have persistent pain or a noticeable structural change, seek professional assessment.
Most importantly, your arch type is only one part of understanding your feet. Foot comfort, fit, activity, symptoms and how your feet function while moving all matter.
