Have you ever wondered whether you have normal, low or high arches? Knowing your foot arch type can help you better understand your foot structure and make more informed decisions about footwear, comfort and arch support.
The good news is that you can get a rough idea of your foot arch type at home using a simple footprint test. A wet-footprint test is commonly used to distinguish between a neutral or medium arch, low or flat arch and high arch. Mayo Clinic Health System recommends dipping the foot in water, stepping onto cardboard and examining the resulting footprint as a simple way to identify arch type.
However, a home arch test is only a screening method. It does not diagnose a foot condition or tell you everything about how your foot functions.
The easiest way to check your foot arch at home is the wet footprint test:
Wet the sole of your bare foot.
Step naturally onto a piece of cardboard or another surface that shows the footprint clearly.
Look at the amount of your midfoot that appears in the footprint.
Compare the pattern with normal, low and high arch examples.
As a general guide:
About half of the midfoot visible: usually suggests a normal or neutral arch.
Most or almost all of the midfoot visible: may suggest a low or flat arch.
Very little of the midfoot visible: may suggest a high arch.
This is a useful starting point, but it should not be treated as a medical diagnosis. Mayo Clinic Health System uses a similar footprint-based approach for general arch identification.
Before testing your own feet, it helps to understand what you are looking for.
The three broad categories commonly used when discussing arch height are:
Normal or neutral arch
Low or flat arch
High arch
Arch height is only one aspect of foot structure. Research studies classify foot types using several measurements, including the Arch Index, Foot Posture Index and normalized navicular height.
A normal or neutral arch has a moderate amount of arch height.
In a footprint, you would generally see:
The heel
The forefoot
A moderate connection through the midfoot
A visible indentation along the inner side of the footprint
Mayo Clinic Health System describes a neutral or medium arch as one where approximately half of the middle portion of the footprint is filled.
A low arch has less visible height and generally produces greater contact through the midfoot.
In a footprint, you may see:
A wide midfoot connection
A footprint that looks closer to the full shape of the foot
Less visible indentation through the middle of the foot
A substantially lowered medial longitudinal arch may be described as a flat foot or pes planus.
However, having a low arch does not automatically mean that you have a painful or dysfunctional foot.
A high arch has greater arch height and generally less midfoot contact with the ground.
In a footprint, you may see:
A narrow midfoot connection
A pronounced inner arch
Very little of the middle of the foot visible
A significantly high-arched foot may be described as pes cavus.
Research has used footprint-based measurements to classify normal, planus and cavus feet, demonstrating that arch classification can be quantified rather than relying only on visual appearance.
The simplest approach is the wet footprint test.
You will need:
A shallow tray or bowl of water
Bare feet
A piece of cardboard, brown paper or another surface that shows a footprint
A towel
Step 1: Prepare the surface
Place your cardboard or paper on a flat surface where you can stand safely.
Avoid slippery floors.
Step 2: Wet your foot
Lightly wet the bottom of one bare foot.
You do not need to soak the entire foot excessively. The goal is simply to leave a visible footprint.
Step 3: Stand naturally
Place the wet foot onto the cardboard and stand normally for a moment.
Try not to deliberately flatten or lift your arch.
Your normal standing position is more useful than intentionally changing how you place your foot.
Step 4: Step away
Lift your foot straight off the surface and examine the footprint.
Look particularly at the middle section of the footprint.
Step 5: Compare the footprint
Use the following general guide:
More midfoot visible → lower arch
Moderate midfoot visible → normal/neutral arch
Very little midfoot visible → higher arch
Mayo Clinic Health System uses this same general principle in its consumer guidance on identifying foot arch type.
The most important part of the footprint is the midfoot.
What does a normal arch footprint look like?
A normal or neutral arch generally produces a footprint where roughly the middle portion is visible, rather than showing either the entire foot or only a narrow connection between the heel and forefoot.
A simple visual pattern is:
Heel → moderate midfoot → forefoot
This is only a general guide because individual feet vary.
What does a low arch or flat-foot footprint look like?
A low arch generally produces a footprint with more of the midfoot visible.
It may look like:
Heel → broad midfoot → forefoot
In a very low or flat arch, the footprint can appear almost like the complete outline of the foot.
Mayo Clinic Health System describes a footprint that looks close to a complete foot as indicative of a flat/low arch.
What does a high-arch footprint look like?
A high arch generally produces less midfoot contact.
It may look like:
Heel → narrow connection → forefoot
The middle portion of the footprint may be substantially narrower than the heel and forefoot.
Mayo Clinic Health System describes seeing very little of the footprint in the middle as an indication of a high arch.
| Footprint Pattern | Likely Arch Type |
|---|---|
| About half of midfoot visible | Normal / neutral arch |
| Most of the midfoot visible | Low / flat arch |
| Very little midfoot visible | High arch |
Remember that these are general visual indicators, not diagnostic thresholds.
Different research studies use different measurement techniques and classification boundaries. For example, studies have used Arch Index values to distinguish low, normal and high-arched feet.
Yes, you can get additional clues without doing a wet-foot test, although visual inspection is less precise.
1. Look at your arch while standing
Stand barefoot on a firm, level surface.
Look at the inside edge of your foot.
A visible but moderate arch may suggest a normal or neutral arch.
A very low or barely visible arch may suggest a low arch.
A pronounced curve with a substantial gap beneath the middle of the foot may suggest a high arch.
However, visual appearance alone cannot fully characterize foot posture.
2. Compare your feet while sitting and standing
Look at your feet while sitting and then while standing.
A low arch may become more pronounced when you put weight on the foot.
This distinction is important because some low arches are flexible, meaning the arch changes depending on whether the foot is loaded.
Foot posture can therefore look different when your foot is:
Non-weight-bearing
Standing
Walking
Running
Research protocols use weight-bearing measurements and other structural assessments when classifying foot posture.
3. Look at your footwear
The wear pattern on your shoes may provide clues about how you load your feet, but it should not be used as a standalone arch test.
Shoe wear can be affected by:
How you walk
Your activity
Shoe construction
Walking surface
Shoe age
Your body mechanics
So treat shoe wear as an additional observation rather than proof of a particular arch type.
Another simple observation is to look at your arch while rising onto your toes.
Stand barefoot and slowly rise onto your toes while maintaining balance safely.
Observe whether your arch becomes more visible.
This can provide information about how the arch behaves under different loading conditions, but it should not be used by itself to diagnose a foot condition.
If you have pain, weakness, instability or difficulty performing the movement, do not force the test.
The wet footprint test is useful for general arch-type identification, but it has limitations.
A footprint captures the area of the foot contacting the surface. It does not directly measure every structural feature of your foot.
Your footprint can also be affected by:
How much weight you put through the foot
Your standing position
The surface
Foot moisture
Foot flexibility
How you step onto the surface
Mayo Clinic Health System presents the wet-footprint method as a practical way to determine general arch type, while scientific studies use more formal measurements when precise foot classification is required.
So the best way to interpret the test is:
A wet footprint can give you a useful indication of your arch type, but it is not a complete assessment of your foot.
When more detailed assessment is required, clinicians and researchers can use objective measurements.
Some commonly studied measures include:
Arch Index
The Arch Index compares the area of the midfoot with the overall relevant footprint area.
In research, the foot is divided into regions and the midfoot area is compared with the total footprint area. A larger midfoot proportion generally corresponds to a flatter foot.
Navicular Height
Navicular height is another measure used to assess arch structure.
It measures the position of the navicular bone relative to the supporting surface.
Research has found normalized navicular height to be associated with other measurements of foot structure.
Foot Posture Index
The Foot Posture Index (FPI) is another clinical tool used to assess foot posture.
Research has used FPI together with Arch Index and normalized navicular height to classify normal, planus and cavus foot types.
These measurements are useful for clinical or research assessment but are generally unnecessary if you simply want a basic idea of whether your arch is low, normal or high.
Not necessarily.
There is no single measurement that completely describes every aspect of foot structure and function.
Research has used multiple approaches, including:
Footprints
Arch Index
Navicular height
Foot Posture Index
Weight-bearing photographs
Plantar-pressure measurements
Radiographic measurements
Different methods capture different aspects of foot posture. Research has also noted that there is no universally established single "gold standard" for determining foot type.
This is why an at-home test should be viewed as a screening tool rather than a diagnosis.
Yes.
Your two feet do not have to be identical.
You may notice differences in:
Arch height
Foot width
Foot length
Midfoot contact
Flexibility
Pressure distribution
For this reason, when performing a home footprint test, consider testing both feet separately.
If you notice a substantial difference between the two feet, especially if the difference is new or accompanied by pain, swelling or weakness, consider discussing it with a qualified healthcare professional.
The appearance and behavior of an arch can change depending on whether the foot is loaded or unloaded.
A person's foot structure can also change over time due to factors such as:
Age
Injury
Changes in body weight
Changes in activity
Tendon or ligament problems
Other changes affecting foot structure
A foot that looks different when standing compared with sitting is not necessarily experiencing a pathological change.
The important question is whether the change is accompanied by symptoms or functional limitations.
No.
Your arch type describes a structural characteristic, not a complete measure of foot health.
A person with a low arch may have no symptoms.
A person with a high arch may have no symptoms.
And someone with a normal-looking arch can still experience foot pain.
Research has demonstrated measurable differences among normal, planus and cavus foot types, including differences in centre-of-pressure characteristics during walking. But this does not mean that one arch type is inherently unhealthy.
Therefore:
Arch type ≠ diagnosis.
Arch type ≠ pain level.
Arch type ≠ automatic need for arch support.
Once you have a general idea of your arch type, the next step is not necessarily to buy a particular product.
Instead, consider:
How comfortable are your feet?
Do you experience pain during walking or exercise?
Does your footwear feel comfortable?
Do you have any noticeable changes in foot structure?
Does one foot behave differently from the other?
Does your activity require prolonged standing, walking or running?
Arch type is one factor among many when considering footwear and support.

Not by itself.
Arch type can be useful information, but fit and comfort remain important when selecting footwear.
Mayo Clinic Health System specifically notes that comfort and proper fit should be major considerations when selecting athletic shoes, rather than assuming there is one universally best shoe for a particular foot type.
When evaluating footwear, consider:
Length
Width
Toe-box space
Heel fit
Cushioning
Midsole construction
Flexibility
Overall comfort
Your intended activity
Your arch type can be one input into this decision rather than the only deciding factor.
A home arch test is generally useful for curiosity and basic awareness.
Professional assessment becomes more relevant if you have:
Persistent foot pain
Recurrent ankle problems
Significant swelling
Numbness or weakness
Difficulty walking
Difficulty running or exercising
A noticeable change in arch height
A major difference between your feet
Pain that interferes with daily activities
A healthcare professional can assess your foot structure and function and determine whether further evaluation is appropriate.
Do not rely on a wet footprint test to diagnose a painful or changing foot.
| Feature | Normal / Neutral | Low / Flat | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arch height | Moderate | Lower | Higher |
| Midfoot footprint | Moderate | Greater | Less |
| Typical footprint | Partial midfoot | Broad midfoot | Narrow midfoot |
| Common term | Medium/neutral arch | Low arch/flat foot | High arch |
| Can be symptom-free? |
If you're wondering “How do I know what type of foot arch I have?”, a wet footprint test is one of the simplest ways to get a general indication.
Remember:
Normal/neutral arch: usually shows moderate midfoot contact.
Low/flat arch: generally shows greater midfoot contact.
High arch: generally shows less midfoot contact.
Test both feet, because they may not be identical.
A wet footprint is a screening method, not a diagnosis.
More objective assessments can use Arch Index, Foot Posture Index, navicular height and other measurements.
Your arch type does not automatically determine whether your feet are healthy or whether you need arch support.
Comfort, symptoms, activity and footwear fit should also be considered.
