Short answer: No, not everyone with flat feet needs arch support. Flat feet are common and often cause no symptoms. However, if flat feet are associated with foot fatigue, pain, discomfort, instability, excessive pronation, or difficulty with walking or standing, supportive footwear or insoles may be useful for some people. The right choice depends on your symptoms, foot structure, activity level, and the underlying cause of your flat feet.
An important distinction is that arch support is a potential comfort and mechanical-support tool, not a requirement simply because your arch is low. The NHS specifically notes that people with flat feet who have no problems generally do not need treatment, while shoe insoles and other measures may be considered when flat feet are causing problems.
So, if you have flat feet, the better question isn't simply:
“Do I need arch support?”
It is:
“Are my flat feet causing symptoms or functional problems, and could appropriate support help me manage them?”
In this guide, we'll cover:
Whether all flat feet need arch support When arch support may be useful When you may not need it Whether arch support can fix or correct flat feet Whether insoles are necessary What type of support may be appropriate How flat feet, overpronation and arch support are connected What the evidence says about foot orthoses When to seek professional assessment Frequently asked questions about flat feet and arch support
Not necessarily.
Having a low or flattened arch does not automatically mean that something is wrong with your feet.
Flat feet are common, and many people can walk, run, exercise and carry out their normal activities without pain or functional limitations. The NHS states that flat feet usually do not cause problems and that people with symptom-free flat feet generally do not need treatment.
Arch support becomes more relevant when your flat-foot posture is associated with symptoms or difficulty performing activities.
Foot or arch fatigue after prolonged standing
Foot pain during walking
Discomfort after long periods on your feet
Symptoms associated with excessive pronation
Difficulty tolerating certain footwear
Repeated discomfort during exercise
A feeling that your feet lack stability
Symptoms that improve when wearing supportive footwear
However, these symptoms do not prove that flat feet are the cause, and arch support is not appropriate as a universal treatment for everyone.
The shape of your foot is only one part of the picture.
Two people can have similarly low arches but completely different experiences.
Person A: Flat feet without symptoms
Someone may have had low arches since childhood and experience:
No foot pain
No walking problems
No balance issues
No difficulty exercising
No significant change in foot shape
There may be little reason to introduce an arch-support product simply because the foot looks flat.
Person B: Flat feet with symptoms
Another person may have flat feet accompanied by:
Arch discomfort
Foot fatigue
Inner ankle discomfort
Pain after prolonged walking
Difficulty standing for long periods
Changes in walking mechanics
In this situation, footwear or an insole providing appropriate support may be worth considering.
The NHS similarly recommends seeking assessment when flat feet are painful, stiff, weak or numb, interfere with walking or balance, develop later in life, or affect only one foot.
The key difference is symptoms and function-not simply arch height.
Arch support can be useful when the goal is to provide additional support under the foot, influence loading or improve comfort during weight-bearing activities.
Research on foot orthoses in adults with flat feet suggests that orthoses can affect aspects of foot and lower-limb biomechanics. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found significant effects of foot orthoses on measures including rearfoot eversion, ankle movement and certain joint moments during walking in adults with flexible flat feet.
More recent research has also investigated orthoses in people with asymptomatic flat feet during running. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found that some orthotic designs incorporating medial posts produced changes in ankle and tendon-loading measures, although the authors emphasized that further research is needed.
This is important because it demonstrates that foot orthoses can influence mechanics, but it does not mean that every person with flat feet needs an insole or that every type of arch support produces the same result.
Rather than thinking of an insole as “creating an arch,” think of it as providing an additional support surface under the foot.
Depending on its design, an arch-support insole may:
Increase contact under parts of the midfoot
Alter pressure distribution
Influence foot motion
Provide a more stable interface between the foot and shoe
Change certain aspects of lower-limb mechanics
Improve perceived comfort for some users
A systematic review of adults with flat feet found that evidence for foot orthoses has historically been inconsistent, with considerable variation in study quality, orthotic design and outcome measures.
That means “arch support works” is too broad a statement.
A more accurate statement is:
Certain foot orthoses can influence foot mechanics and may improve symptoms or comfort for some people with flat feet, but their effects depend on the individual and the design of the orthosis.
Usually, you should not think of arch support as permanently fixing or rebuilding a flat foot.
An insole sits underneath the foot and provides external support. It doesn't automatically change the bones, tendons and ligaments that determine your underlying foot structure.
The NHS specifically notes that treatments such as insoles, stretches and exercises will not change the shape of your feet, although they can help with problems such as pain or stiffness.
So there's an important difference between:
Supporting a flat foot
and
Permanently changing the structure of a flat foot.
An arch-support insole may help manage symptoms or alter mechanics while you wear it, but that is different from permanently creating a higher anatomical arch.
Arch support may influence foot mechanics, but it should not automatically be described as correcting flat feet.
The word correct can imply that a person's natural foot structure is abnormal and needs to be permanently changed.
For many people, flat feet are simply their natural foot structure.
The better question is:
Does the support improve comfort, function or the specific mechanical issue you're trying to address?
This approach is also consistent with the NHS position that symptom-free flat feet generally don't require treatment.
No.
There is no universal requirement for people with flat feet to wear insoles.
If you have flat feet but:
Have no pain
Walk comfortably
Exercise normally
Have no significant instability
Have no progressive change in foot shape
you may not need an insole simply because you have a low arch.
On the other hand, an insole may be worth trying if you experience discomfort or fatigue during specific activities.
The NHS lists shoe insoles among possible measures when flat feet are causing problems.
No.
Flat feet and overpronation are related but aren't identical.
Flat feet describe a low or flattened arch posture.
Pronation describes a movement of the foot during weight-bearing.
A person can have a low arch without experiencing problematic symptoms from pronation.
Similarly, the presence of pronation alone doesn't establish that an individual needs an arch-support product.
This is one reason why simply looking at your footprint isn't enough to determine what type of support you need.
It can be useful for some people, particularly when flat feet are associated with symptoms or specific functional needs.
But “good” depends on:
The person's foot structure
Whether the flat foot is flexible or rigid
Symptoms
Activity level
Footwear
The design and fit of the insole
The underlying condition
Research supports the idea that orthoses can influence biomechanics in adults with flexible flat feet, but the evidence isn't strong enough to say that one design works for everyone.
A 2021 systematic review specifically concluded that evidence for foot orthoses in adults with flat feet was limited and inconsistent, highlighting the need for better randomized controlled trials.
More recent evidence has added useful information, but it still supports an individualized rather than one-size-fits-all approach.
The research picture is more nuanced than many online claims suggest.
Evidence point 1: Orthoses can change foot mechanics
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 24 studies found that foot orthoses produced significant changes in several lower-limb biomechanical measures during walking in adults with flexible flat feet.
This provides evidence that an insole isn't simply a passive piece of foam-it can influence how forces and movement occur through the foot and lower limb.
Evidence point 2: The design matters
A 2025 systematic review of runners with asymptomatic flat feet found that arch-support-only orthoses did not produce significant changes in the primary biomechanical measures, whereas some designs combining arch support with medial posts produced significant changes in selected ankle and tendon-loading measures.
This is an important finding for consumers:
More arch support isn't automatically better.
The shape, stiffness, posting, fit and intended use all matter.
Evidence point 3: Evidence has historically been inconsistent
A 2021 systematic review of foot orthoses for adults with flat feet found limited evidence and substantial variation in study quality.
This means Frido's content should avoid blanket claims such as:
“Arch support fixes flat feet”
“Everyone with flat feet needs insoles”
“Arch support prevents all flat-foot problems”
“A rigid insole is always better”
Those claims go beyond what the evidence supports.
It may help some people, depending on the cause of their pain and the type of support used.
Pain associated with flat feet can have different sources.
For example, someone may have:
General foot fatigue
Arch discomfort
Plantar heel pain
Inner ankle discomfort
Tendon-related symptoms
Pain associated with prolonged standing
An insole may be useful as part of symptom management in some cases, but pain should not automatically be attributed to flat feet.
For persistent or unexplained pain, identifying the underlying cause is more important than simply adding arch support.
The NHS recommends professional assessment for painful flat feet and for symptoms such as stiffness, weakness, numbness, walking or balance problems.
Yes, insoles can help some people with flat feet, particularly when they are being used to address symptoms or provide additional support.
But there is a major distinction between:
“Insoles can help.”
and
“Everyone with flat feet needs insoles.”
The first can be supported in appropriate contexts.
The second is too broad.
A 2026 systematic review and network meta-analysis reported pain reductions with insole interventions in the included flatfoot trials, while also emphasizing clinical, biomechanical and radiographic outcomes.
However, the included trials involved relatively young populations, and evidence from different populations and flatfoot presentations cannot automatically be generalized to every adult.
There isn't one universally “best” arch support for every flat foot.
The appropriate choice depends on your foot, symptoms and intended use.
1. Mild, comfortable support
If you're primarily looking for everyday comfort, a moderate or semi-rigid support may feel more natural than a very firm structure.
2. More structured support
People who need greater mechanical support may prefer a more structured insole.
However, firmness alone does not determine whether an insole is appropriate.
3. Custom orthoses
A podiatrist, physiotherapist or other qualified professional may recommend a custom orthosis when there is a specific clinical need that requires individualized assessment.
A useful general rule is:
You should feel supported rather than pressured.
An insole that creates a painful pressure point under your arch isn't necessarily “working better” because you can feel it more strongly.
Yes.
An arch-support product that doesn't match your foot or footwear can create unwanted pressure.
Possible signs that an insole isn't comfortable for you include:
Localized arch pain
Pressure or burning under the arch
New discomfort after inserting the insole
Feeling that the foot is being pushed into an unnatural position
Reduced walking comfort
New pressure points elsewhere in the foot
This is why fit and gradual adaptation matter.
The goal isn't to maximize the amount of support.
The goal is to provide appropriate support for the individual's needs.
If you decide to try an insole for everyday comfort, avoid assuming that more support is automatically better.
A practical approach is:
Step 1: Identify why you want support
Are you trying to address:
General foot fatigue?
Discomfort after standing?
Walking discomfort?
A specific symptom?
A footwear-fit issue?
Knowing your goal helps you choose an appropriate solution.
Step 2: Check your existing footwear
An insole should fit securely without making the shoe too tight.
Pay attention to:
Toe room
Heel fit
Arch position
Overall shoe volume
Step 3: Introduce support gradually
If you're moving from completely flat footwear to a more structured insole, give yourself time to adapt rather than immediately wearing it for an entire day.
Step 4: Pay attention to symptoms
Comfort should improve or remain acceptable.
If the insole consistently causes new or worsening pain, reconsider the fit or seek professional advice.
Probably not simply because you have flat feet.
This is one of the most important answers in this article.
If your feet are flat but:
Don't hurt
Don't fatigue excessively
Don't restrict your activities
Don't have significant functional problems
there may be no reason to treat the arch height itself.
The NHS states that people with flat feet who aren't experiencing problems generally don't need treatment.
In other words:
A flat foot isn't automatically a problem that needs correcting.
Possibly-but the cause of the pain matters.
If your flat feet are painful, an arch-support insole may be one potential part of conservative management.
However, pain can have multiple causes, and an insole isn't a substitute for identifying the underlying problem.
The NHS recommends assessment for painful, stiff, weak or numb feet and for flat feet associated with walking or balance problems.
If pain is persistent, severe, worsening or associated with a new change in foot shape, consult an appropriate healthcare professional.
Not automatically, but people with symptomatic flat feet may find supportive footwear or insoles useful during prolonged standing.
Standing for long periods increases the amount of time your feet spend bearing weight.
If you notice:
Arch fatigue
Heel discomfort
Foot soreness
Increasing discomfort toward the end of the day
it may be worth evaluating your footwear and considering whether additional support improves your comfort.
The objective should be better comfort and appropriate support, not simply adding the firmest possible arch insert.
Again, not everyone does.
If walking is comfortable, you may not need additional support.
If walking produces discomfort or fatigue, an appropriately fitted insole may be worth trying.
Research shows that foot orthoses can alter several measures of lower-limb mechanics during walking in adults with flexible flat feet.
This is one reason orthoses are sometimes used as part of conservative foot management.
Running introduces different loading demands compared with ordinary walking.
If you have flat feet but run comfortably, there is no universal rule requiring arch-support insoles.
If you experience recurring discomfort, however, an assessment of your footwear, training load, running mechanics and foot structure may be useful.
A 2025 systematic review found that some orthotic configurations influenced ankle and tendon-loading measures in runners with asymptomatic flat feet, but the evidence was based on a limited number of studies and the authors called for further research.
Therefore:
Flat feet + running ≠ automatic need for arch support.
Children deserve a separate consideration.
Flat feet are common during childhood, and the arch often develops naturally as children grow. The NHS notes that most children have flat feet when young and that arches generally develop between approximately ages 3 and 10.
Evidence also does not support the idea that routinely using orthoses in young children will necessarily permanently reshape a flexible flat foot. A systematic review found insufficient strong evidence for a long-term structural effect of orthoses on pediatric flexible flatfoot.
So parents shouldn't assume:
“My child's feet look flat, therefore they need arch-support insoles.”
A child's symptoms, development, walking pattern and clinical assessment are more important.
Not every flat foot is a fallen arch.
Some people naturally have low arches.
Others develop a flatter arch later in life.
If you have noticed a new change in one foot, particularly when accompanied by pain, swelling, weakness or walking difficulty, it deserves more attention.
The NHS specifically recommends medical assessment when someone did not previously have flat feet or when only one foot is affected.

A simple observation is to look at the inside of your feet while standing.
A low or absent visible arch can indicate a flat-foot posture.
You can also compare:
Standing vs sitting
Left foot vs right foot
Your current foot shape vs older photographs or memories
How your shoes wear
Whether you experience pain or fatigue
But home tests cannot determine the underlying cause of a flat foot.

And for a footprint-based assessment:
Wet Foot Test: How to Check Your Arch Type at Home
There are several ways to observe your arch at home, including footprint-based tests and measurements.
However, these methods can tell you more about foot shape or arch appearance than whether you medically need arch support.
If you're curious about your arch structure, see How to Measure Your Foot Arch at Home
Your result should be treated as a starting point-not a diagnosis.
If you've decided that additional support improves your comfort, consider the complete shoe-and-insole combination rather than focusing only on arch height.
1. Appropriate arch contour
The support should sit under the arch rather than creating a concentrated pressure point.
2. Stable heel positioning
A secure heel can help the foot sit consistently within the shoe.
3. Adequate shoe volume
An insole that makes your shoe too tight can create new problems.
4. Suitable cushioning
Support and cushioning are different.
An insole can provide structure while also offering cushioning where appropriate.
For a detailed explanation:
Arch Support vs Cushioning: What's the Difference?
5. Match the support to the activity
An insole for office shoes may have different requirements from one used for walking or running.
It should not be presented as a guaranteed way to prevent progression.
Flat feet can have different causes, and the natural history varies between individuals.
Supportive footwear or orthoses may influence mechanics and symptoms, but that doesn't mean they can prevent every case of progressive arch flattening.
If your arch has recently changed, particularly if the change is accompanied by pain or weakness, focus first on identifying the underlying cause.
Seek professional assessment if your flat feet are associated with:
Persistent or worsening pain
Stiffness
Weakness
Numbness
Swelling
Balance problems
Difficulty walking
Frequent foot or ankle injuries
A new change in arch height
Only one foot becoming flat
A noticeable change in foot shape
These are specifically among the situations for which the NHS recommends seeking medical advice.
This is particularly important when an arch that was previously present appears to be collapsing or when symptoms are progressively worsening.
No, flat feet do not automatically require arch support.
If your flat feet are painless and don't interfere with your activities, you may not need to treat them simply because your arches are low.
If your flat feet are associated with pain, fatigue, instability or functional limitations, supportive footwear or an appropriate insole may be useful as part of a broader approach.
Current research indicates that foot orthoses can influence aspects of foot and lower-limb biomechanics, and some studies report improvements in symptoms or specific outcomes. However, the evidence varies according to the population, orthosis design and outcome being measured.
The most useful principle is:
Don't choose arch support because your feet look flat. Choose it because it addresses a specific comfort or functional need-and make sure the support fits your feet and footwear appropriately.
Not everyone with flat feet needs arch support.
Flat feet are common and can be completely symptom-free.
Arch support may be useful when flat feet are associated with discomfort, fatigue or functional problems.
Insoles can influence foot and lower-limb mechanics, but their effects depend on their design and the individual.
Arch support does not automatically “fix” or permanently rebuild a flat foot.
More arch support isn't necessarily better.
The right insole should feel supportive rather than create painful pressure.
A new, painful or one-sided flat foot should be professionally assessed.
Children with flexible flat feet don't automatically need arch-support insoles.
Your symptoms and functional needs matter more than the appearance of your arch alone.
