The arch of your foot may hurt because of plantar fasciitis, overuse, flat feet, high arches, footwear problems, tendon irritation, an injury or, less commonly, nerve-related problems.
Your feet absorb and redistribute forces every time you stand, walk or run. The arches help with shock absorption, adaptation to surfaces and movement mechanics. Problems affecting the tissues or mechanics of the foot can therefore result in pain around the arch.
The most useful clues are:
Where exactly does it hurt?
When does it hurt?
Does it hurt when you walk or stand?
Is it worse with the first steps in the morning?
Did it start after running, exercise or increased walking?
Did you recently change your shoes or activity level?
Is there swelling, bruising, numbness or tingling?
These details can help narrow down the possibilities.
Where Exactly Does Your Arch Hurt?
The location of the pain matters because different structures can be involved.
Pain between the heel and arch
Pain around the heel extending into the arch can occur with plantar fasciitis.
The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot that contributes to arch support. When it is repeatedly stressed, pain can develop around the heel and sometimes into the arch.
Pain along the inner arch
Pain along the inside of the foot can occur with flat feet or problems involving structures that help support the arch.
The posterior tibial tendon, for example, helps support the arch, and problems affecting it can contribute to arch-related symptoms.
Pain across the bottom of the arch
Pain along the sole may be related to overuse, plantar fascia problems, footwear, foot structure or injury.
Burning or tingling in the arch or foot
Burning, tingling, electric or shooting sensations may suggest nerve involvement rather than simple muscular fatigue.
If these symptoms persist, professional assessment is appropriate.
Why Does My Arch Hurt When I Walk?
Arch pain when walking can occur because walking repeatedly loads the structures that support your foot.
Possible contributors include:
The NHS lists exercise, tight footwear and foot shape among possible causes of pain in the bottom of the foot.
If the pain appears only after you have walked for a considerable distance, cumulative loading may be contributing.
If it appears immediately with every step, particularly after an injury, the situation is different and may need assessment.
Why does my arch hurt after walking?
Arch pain after walking can happen when the foot has been exposed to more loading than it is accustomed to.
This can occur after:
Prolonged walking and standing are recognised contributors to foot and plantar-fascia problems.
If the same pain returns every time you walk, however, it is worth investigating the underlying cause rather than repeatedly treating the symptom.
Why Does My Arch Hurt When I Stand?
Standing for long periods can increase the load placed on the foot and may aggravate arch pain.
This is particularly relevant if you:
Work on your feet
Stand on hard floors
Have recently increased your standing time
Wear shoes without adequate cushioning
Have flat feet or high arches
Already have plantar-fascia or tendon irritation
Cleveland Clinic identifies prolonged standing, overuse, footwear and foot structure among contributors to foot pain.
If your arch feels fine after waking but gradually becomes sore after several hours of standing, cumulative loading may be an important part of the picture.
Why Does My Arch Hurt in the Morning?
Arch pain that is especially noticeable with your first steps after waking can occur with plantar fasciitis.
During periods of rest, the plantar fascia can tighten. When you stand and begin walking, the tissue is suddenly loaded again, which can produce pain.
A common pattern is:
Little or no pain while lying in bed.
Pain with the first few steps after getting up.
Symptoms ease somewhat after moving around.
Pain may return or worsen after prolonged standing, walking or running.
The NHS describes this pattern as characteristic of plantar fasciitis.
Morning arch pain does not automatically mean you have plantar fasciitis, but it is a useful clue.

Why Does My Arch Hurt After Exercise?
A sudden increase in physical activity can place additional stress on the structures of the foot.
You may notice arch pain after:
Starting to run
Increasing running distance
Starting a new sport
Adding jumping exercises
Increasing gym training
Walking significantly more than usual
Returning to exercise after a break
Plantar-fascia symptoms, for example, can be associated with changes or increases in activity, while repetitive exercise can also contribute to general foot pain.
If your pain started after changing your training routine, consider whether the increase was too rapid.
Why Does My Arch Hurt After Running?
Running repeatedly loads the foot and can expose weaknesses or irritations that may not be noticeable during ordinary walking.
Possible contributors include:
Rapid increases in mileage
Increased running intensity
Running on hard surfaces
Inadequate recovery
Unsuitable footwear
Flat feet
High arches
Plantar-fascia irritation
AAOS notes that overuse, walking or standing on hard surfaces, foot anatomy and inadequate footwear can contribute to excess stress on the plantar fascia.
If arch pain repeatedly appears during or after running, reducing the aggravating load and reviewing your footwear and training progression may be sensible.
Can Plantar Fasciitis Cause Arch Pain?
Yes. Plantar fasciitis can cause pain in the arch as well as around the heel.
The plantar fascia runs from the heel along the underside of the foot and helps form and support the arch. Excessive or repeated stress can cause pain along this area.
Typical clues include:
Pain around the heel or arch
Pain with the first steps after sleeping
Pain after sitting for a while
Pain after prolonged standing
Pain that increases with extended walking or running
Tenderness along the bottom of the foot
The important distinction is that “arch pain” is not synonymous with plantar fasciitis.
Other conditions can produce similar symptoms.
Can Flat Feet Cause Arch Pain?
Flat feet can cause arch pain in some people, although having flat feet does not necessarily mean your feet will hurt.
Flat feet involve a low or absent visible arch when standing. The condition can affect foot mechanics and, in symptomatic cases, contribute to pain or difficulty with walking.
If you suspect your arch has collapsed or become flatter over time, particularly if one foot is changing more than the other, professional assessment can help identify the cause.

Can High Arches Cause Arch Pain?
High arches can contribute to foot discomfort in some people because foot structure affects how forces are distributed during standing and movement.
High arches do not automatically mean your feet will hurt.
Some people with high arches have no symptoms, while others may develop discomfort after prolonged walking, standing or exercise.
If high arches are the focus of your symptoms, see:
High Arches: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options
and
Can High Arches Cause Foot Pain?.
Can Overpronation Cause Arch Pain?
Overpronation can place additional strain on the structures supporting the arch and may contribute to symptoms in some people.
During walking and running, the foot naturally pronates. Overpronation refers to the foot rolling inward more than usual, which can increase strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the arch.
This is one reason why foot mechanics can be relevant when investigating recurring arch pain.
Read our related guide:
Flat Feet and Overpronation: What's the Connection?.
Can Shoes Cause Arch Pain?
Yes, footwear can contribute to foot and arch discomfort.
Shoes that are too tight, poorly fitted or inappropriate for your activity can increase pressure on the foot.
Pay attention to:
A shoe that feels comfortable for a 10-minute walk may not necessarily be comfortable for several hours of standing.
For some people, prolonged barefoot walking can aggravate existing foot symptoms.
This is particularly relevant if you suddenly increase the amount of barefoot walking after spending most of your day in supportive footwear.
Cleveland Clinic lists barefoot walking or standing among possible contributors to plantar-fascia irritation in some people.
That does not mean barefoot walking is inherently harmful. The important factors are your individual foot condition, activity level and tolerance.
Can Standing on Hard Floors Cause Arch Pain?
Yes. Prolonged standing on hard surfaces can increase stress on the feet and may aggravate arch or plantar-fascia discomfort.
This can matter if your work involves standing for many hours on:
Concrete floors
Tile floors
Warehouse floors
Retail floors
Hospital floors
AAOS identifies prolonged walking or standing on hard surfaces as a source of additional stress on the plantar fascia.
If symptoms occur primarily during long shifts, footwear and load management deserve attention.
Could a Tendon Problem Cause Arch Pain?
Yes. Tendons around the foot and ankle contribute to arch support and stability, so tendon problems can sometimes cause pain around the arch.
The posterior tibial tendon, for example, helps support the arch. Problems involving this tendon can be associated with flat-foot-related changes.
Consider professional assessment if arch pain is accompanied by:
These symptoms should not simply be assumed to be ordinary arch soreness.
Could an Injury Cause Arch Pain?
Yes.
A sprain, strain or other injury can cause pain in the bottom or middle of the foot. The NHS notes that pain, swelling and bruising following intense or repetitive activity may indicate a sprain or another injury.
If your pain started suddenly after:
Twisting your foot
Jumping
Falling
Running
A sports injury
An impact
do not assume it is ordinary arch fatigue.
Difficulty bearing weight or significant swelling/bruising warrants evaluation.
Could Nerve Problems Cause Pain in the Arch?
Yes. Nerve-related foot pain can feel different from typical muscle or tissue soreness.
Possible sensations include:
Burning
Tingling
Numbness
Electric-shock-like pain
Shooting pain
Cleveland Clinic notes that nerve pain in the foot can be associated with conditions including tarsal tunnel syndrome and peripheral neuropathy.
If these sensations persist or are associated with weakness or loss of sensation, seek professional medical advice.
Why Does My Arch Hurt but My Heel Doesn't?
Not all arch pain comes from plantar fasciitis, and not everyone with plantar-fascia irritation experiences identical symptoms.
The plantar fascia extends through the arch, so some people can experience pain more prominently in the arch than the heel.
Other possibilities include:
Foot mechanics
Overuse
Tendon irritation
Flat feet
High arches
Footwear
Injury
The exact location and pattern of pain matter.
Why Does Only One Arch Hurt?
Pain affecting only one foot can happen when a local issue affects that side.
Possible explanations include:
If one foot suddenly becomes painful while the other remains comfortable, especially following an injury, it is worth getting assessed.
Why Do Both Arches Hurt?
Pain in both arches may be associated with factors affecting both feet, such as:
Foot structure
Footwear
Increased activity
Prolonged standing
Running
Plantar-fascia problems
Bilateral foot mechanics
The fact that both feet hurt does not by itself identify the cause.
What Can I Do for Arch Pain at Home?
For mild pain that is not associated with an injury or other warning signs, several conservative measures may help.
Reduce aggravating activity
Temporarily reduce activities that clearly make the pain worse.
This does not necessarily mean complete bed rest. The goal is to reduce excessive loading while the foot settles.
Wear comfortable footwear
Choose shoes with adequate room and appropriate cushioning and support.
The NHS recommends shoes with plenty of room, a low heel and a soft sole for pain in the bottom of the foot.
Try gentle stretching
Gentle foot and ankle stretching may help some conditions.
For plantar-fascia-related pain, stretching is commonly included in conservative management.
Use ice for short-term relief
The NHS suggests an ice pack wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes every two to three hours for pain in the bottom of the foot.
Never apply ice directly to the skin.
Consider an insole when appropriate
Soft insoles or pads may provide additional comfort for some people with foot pain.
However, an insole should not automatically be considered the answer to every type of arch pain.
If the pain has a specific underlying cause, the type of support matters.

Does Arch Support Help When Your Arch Hurts?
Arch support can help some people, but more arch support is not automatically better.
The usefulness of an insole or arch support depends on:
Your foot structure
The underlying cause of pain
Where the support contacts your foot
The footwear it is used in
Your activity
How your foot responds to it
For example, people with painful flat feet may benefit from orthotic support, while people with high arches may need a different approach to pressure distribution.
Therefore, don't choose an arch support simply because the word “arch” appears on the package.
When Should You Stop Treating Arch Pain Yourself?
Self-care may be reasonable for mild, uncomplicated symptoms, but there are situations where professional evaluation is more appropriate.
Seek medical advice if:
Pain is severe
Pain started after an injury
You cannot walk normally
You cannot put weight on the foot
There is significant swelling
There is extensive bruising
You have persistent numbness or tingling
Your symptoms are getting worse
Your arch appears to be changing shape
Pain keeps returning
Symptoms do not improve with reasonable self-care
The NHS specifically advises against self-diagnosing the cause of pain in the bottom of the foot and recommends assessment when a more serious problem may be present.
How Long Does Arch Pain Take to Go Away?
There is no single answer.
How long arch pain lasts depends on its underlying cause, severity and how much the aggravating activity continues.
Mild overuse-related soreness may settle after reducing the activity that triggered it.
Conditions such as plantar fasciitis can take considerably longer and may require consistent conservative management. NHS guidance recommends seeking medical advice if plantar-fasciitis symptoms do not improve within two weeks.
If your pain is persistent or repeatedly returning, finding the cause is more useful than repeatedly masking the symptoms.
A Simple Way to Think About Your Arch Pain
Use the pattern of your symptoms as a starting point-not as a self-diagnosis.
This table is not a diagnostic tool. Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, and a healthcare professional may need to examine the foot to determine the actual cause.
How to Prevent Arch Pain From Coming Back?
Once the pain improves, preventing repeated overload can be just as important.
Increase activity gradually
If you're starting running or substantially increasing your walking, avoid sudden increases.
Choose footwear for the activity
Walking shoes, running shoes and everyday footwear have different requirements.
Replace worn footwear
Shoes lose cushioning and structural properties over time.
Maintain foot and calf mobility
Regular gentle mobility work may be useful, particularly if stiffness contributes to your symptoms.
Strengthen the foot and lower leg appropriately
A physiotherapist can recommend exercises suited to your specific condition.
Don't ignore recurring pain
If your arch repeatedly hurts after the same activity, consider why.
The answer may involve training volume, footwear, foot mechanics or an underlying condition.
Arch Pain and Your Foot Type
Your natural arch shape can influence foot mechanics, but arch height alone does not determine whether your feet should hurt.
Flat feet
Flat feet may alter how the foot loads and moves. Some people experience no symptoms, while others develop pain or walking problems.

Arch height is only one factor
Two people with similar-looking arches can have very different symptoms.
Activity, footwear, tissue capacity, strength, mobility and previous injuries can all influence whether the foot becomes painful.
Arch Pain Is a Symptom-Not a Diagnosis
One of the biggest mistakes people make when searching for “why does my arch hurt?” is jumping directly to a particular diagnosis.
For example:
“My arch hurts, so I must have plantar fasciitis.”
Not necessarily.
Or:
“My feet are flat, so that's definitely why my arch hurts.”
Again, not necessarily.
Or:
“My arch hurts, so I need a stronger arch-support insole.”
That may or may not be appropriate.
The same symptom can have different causes.
This is why the combination of location + timing + activity + associated symptoms is more useful than the word “arch pain” alone.
Key Takeaways
The arch of your foot can hurt for many reasons.
Common contributors include plantar fasciitis, overuse, flat feet, high arches, footwear and injury.
Pain that is worst with the first steps after sleeping or resting can occur with plantar fasciitis.
Pain after prolonged walking or standing may reflect cumulative loading or an underlying foot problem.
Flat feet and high arches can influence foot mechanics, but neither automatically means you will develop pain.
Burning, tingling or numbness can indicate a nerve-related problem.
Comfortable footwear, activity modification, gentle stretching and short-term measures such as ice may help mild symptoms.
Insoles or arch supports can help some people, but the right type depends on the cause.
Persistent, severe, injury-related or unexplained pain should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Final Word
If the arch of your foot hurts, don't focus only on the pain-look at the pattern behind it.
Pain with the first steps in the morning may point toward plantar-fascia involvement. Pain after a sudden increase in walking or running may indicate excessive loading. Inner-arch pain may involve the structures supporting the arch, while burning or tingling can suggest nerve involvement.
Flat feet, high arches, footwear and activity can all influence how forces move through the foot, but none of them automatically explains every case of arch pain.
For mild symptoms, appropriate footwear, temporary activity modification, gentle stretching and other conservative measures may help. But if your pain persists, keeps returning or comes with concerning symptoms, getting the underlying cause assessed is more useful than continually treating the symptom.
Your arch hurts for a reason. The goal is to find the reason-not simply to add more support.
