Quick Answer: Why Does My Arch Hurt When I Walk?
Your arch may hurt when walking because walking repeatedly loads the plantar fascia, muscles, tendons and other structures that support the foot. Common contributors include:
Plantar fasciitis
Overuse or a sudden increase in walking
Flat feet
Overpronation
High arches
Unsuitable or poorly fitting footwear
Tendon irritation
Previous foot injury
Stress-related injuries
Less commonly, nerve or other medical conditions
Plantar fasciitis is one of the common causes of pain around the bottom of the foot and arch, while flat feet, overuse and footwear problems can also contribute to foot pain.
The most useful questions to ask are:
Does the pain start immediately or only after walking for a while?
Does it happen with every step?
Is it worse after a long walk?
Is it worse in the morning?
Did you recently increase your walking or exercise?
Did you change your shoes?
Is there swelling, bruising, numbness or tingling?
These details can help distinguish ordinary activity-related soreness from a problem that needs further evaluation.
The arch is not simply an empty space between the heel and forefoot.
Your foot contains bones, ligaments, muscles and connective tissues that work together to support your body while you stand and move. The arches help the foot act as a spring, absorb and release energy, and adapt to uneven surfaces.
During walking, your foot repeatedly goes through loading and unloading.
That means every step places some demand on:
When the amount of loading exceeds what your tissues can comfortably tolerate, pain may develop.
This is why a person can feel fine while sitting but develop arch pain after walking for 30 minutes, an hour or several kilometres.
What Causes Arch Pain When Walking?
There isn't one universal cause of arch pain when walking.
1. Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of pain involving the bottom of the foot and can cause pain in the arch.
The plantar fascia is a strong band of connective tissue that runs along the underside of the foot and contributes to arch support. Repeated stress or irritation can make walking painful.
Typical symptoms may include:
Pain under the heel or along the arch
Pain when putting weight on the foot
Pain after periods of rest
Morning pain
Pain that increases after prolonged walking or standing
Some people experience pain that changes depending on activity and time of day.
For a deeper look at the condition, see our related guide on High Arches and Plantar Fasciitis: Is There a Connection?.
2. Walking Too Much or Increasing Activity Too Quickly
Sometimes the explanation is simpler: your feet may be doing more work than they are accustomed to.
This can happen when you:
Suddenly increase your daily step count
Start walking for exercise
Go on a long trip
Start a new job requiring more standing and walking
Begin hiking
Return to exercise after a break
Increase running or sports activity
Sudden increases in activity and prolonged walking or standing can contribute to plantar-fascia and other foot symptoms.
The problem is not necessarily walking itself. It may be the sudden change in the amount of walking.
3. Flat Feet
Flat feet can affect how the foot moves and loads during walking and may contribute to pain in some people.
When the arch is low or collapses during standing, the foot may change position as it bears weight. Symptomatic flat feet can be associated with pain and problems with walking.
However, having flat feet does not automatically mean you have a problem.
Some people have naturally low arches and no pain.
If flat feet are suspected to be contributing to your symptoms, read:
Can Arch Support Correct Flat Feet?
and
Can Insoles Help Flat Feet?.
4. Overpronation
When you walk, your foot naturally moves through pronation. Overpronation means the foot rolls inward more than expected during movement.
This can increase stress on the muscles, tendons and ligaments supporting the arch.
If your arch pain is accompanied by noticeable changes in how your foot rolls inward while walking, foot mechanics may be worth assessing.

Flat Feet and Overpronation: What's the Connection?.
5. High Arches
A high arch can change how pressure is distributed through the foot.
Some people with high arches have no symptoms. Others may develop discomfort during prolonged walking, standing or exercise.
A high arch can therefore be relevant when investigating recurring arch or foot pain, but it should not automatically be assumed to be the cause.
For more information, see:
High Arches: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options
and

6. Poorly Fitting or Unsuitable Shoes
Your shoes influence how your feet experience repeated loading.
Shoes that don't fit properly or don't suit your activity can contribute to foot pain. Cleveland Clinic lists improperly fitting footwear among potential contributors to foot pain.
Pay particular attention to:
A pair of shoes that feels comfortable for a short walk may not remain comfortable during several hours of walking.
7. Tendon Problems
Several tendons around the foot and ankle contribute to movement and stability.
The posterior tibial tendon, for example, helps support the arch. Problems affecting tendons can therefore contribute to pain around the arch or inner foot.
Tendon-related symptoms may be more likely if your arch pain is accompanied by:
8. A Previous Foot Injury
A sprain, strain or other injury can make walking painful.
If your arch pain started immediately after:
don't automatically assume it is ordinary walking fatigue.
Persistent or severe pain after an injury deserves assessment.
9. Stress-Related Injury
Repeated loading can sometimes cause bone or other tissue injuries.
A stress-related problem may be more concerning if pain:
Becomes progressively worse
Is very localised
Persists even after reducing activity
Makes normal walking difficult
Is associated with swelling
Do not try to walk through significant or worsening pain simply because you have not had a specific injury.
10. Nerve-Related Problems
Not all foot pain is mechanical.
If your arch or foot pain feels like:
Burning
Tingling
Pins and needles
Electric shocks
Numbness
Shooting pain
a nerve-related problem may need to be considered. Cleveland Clinic notes that nerve-related foot pain can have several causes and may feel different from typical aching or soreness.
Why Does My Arch Hurt After Walking?
Arch pain that appears after walking may be related to cumulative loading rather than a problem that hurts with every individual step.
For example, you may feel comfortable for the first 20–30 minutes but notice increasing discomfort after a longer period.
This can happen when:
Walking duration increases
You are walking on hard surfaces
Your footwear isn't appropriate
Your feet are not accustomed to the activity
Plantar-fascia symptoms are present
Foot mechanics increase stress on supporting tissues
Long periods of standing and walking can aggravate plantar-fascia-related symptoms.
Why does my arch hurt after a long walk?
A long walk increases the total number of loading cycles your feet experience.
If your tissues tolerate 3,000 steps comfortably but you suddenly walk 15,000 steps, the difference can be substantial.
This doesn't necessarily mean your feet are weak or damaged. It may simply mean the workload increased faster than your tissues could adapt.
Why Does My Arch Hurt More the Longer I Walk?
If your arch pain progressively increases during a walk, consider the relationship between activity and symptoms.
Ask yourself:
Does the pain start after a predictable distance?
Does stopping for a few minutes reduce it?
Does it return when you resume walking?
Has your walking distance recently increased?
Does the same thing happen in the same pair of shoes?
A predictable relationship between walking duration and symptoms can be useful information for a healthcare professional.
It can also help you identify whether load management needs to be part of your solution.
Why Does My Arch Hurt When I Walk but Not When I Rest?
This pattern can occur because walking places mechanical load on tissues that are relatively unloaded while you are sitting or lying down.
Plantar-fascia problems, for example, can produce pain when you stand or put weight through the foot. Other mechanical foot problems can similarly become apparent only when the foot is loaded.
However, pain that disappears at rest does not automatically mean the problem is harmless.
The severity, duration and associated symptoms still matter.
Why Does My Arch Hurt in the Morning and When I Walk?
Morning pain is an important clue.
Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain with the first steps after sleeping or after sitting for a period of time. The pain may then change as you move around.
If your symptoms follow this pattern, plantar-fascia involvement is one possibility.
But morning arch pain is not enough by itself to establish a diagnosis.
Can Walking Too Much Cause Arch Pain?
Yes. Increasing walking volume or spending much longer on your feet than usual can contribute to arch pain.
Your feet have a capacity for loading, and that capacity can change depending on your activity level.
For example:
Normal routine → sudden long walks → repeated loading → insufficient recovery → pain
This is particularly relevant when someone goes from a relatively sedentary routine to:
Prolonged activity and sudden increases in activity are recognised contributors to plantar-fascia symptoms.
Can Walking on Hard Floors Cause Arch Pain?
It can contribute to foot discomfort, particularly when you spend long periods standing or walking on hard surfaces.
Concrete, stone and other hard surfaces can increase the mechanical demands placed on the feet.
This is especially relevant for people who:
Work in factories
Work in retail
Work in hospitals
Spend long hours standing
Exercise on hard surfaces
Walk long distances on pavements
Hard surfaces are recognised as potential irritants for plantar-fascia symptoms.
Can Shoes Cause Arch Pain When Walking?
Yes.
The right shoe for one person may not be the right shoe for another.
A shoe may contribute to discomfort if it:
Is too narrow
Is too short
Has worn-out cushioning
Doesn't suit the activity
Feels unstable
Creates pressure in a particular area
Provides an uncomfortable amount of support
Rather than asking only “Does this shoe have arch support?”, ask:
“Does this shoe remain comfortable throughout the activity I need to perform?”
Cleveland Clinic recommends properly fitting footwear as part of managing and preventing foot pain.
Can Flat Feet Cause Arch Pain When Walking?
Yes, they can.
Flat feet can alter the mechanics of the foot during weight-bearing and may contribute to pain or walking problems in symptomatic individuals.
But flat feet are not automatically abnormal.
If you have always had low arches and have no symptoms, treatment may not be necessary.
The situation is different if you have:
New or worsening pain
A recently flattened arch
One foot becoming flatter than the other
Difficulty walking
Inner ankle pain
Increasing fatigue during walking

Can High Arches Cause Pain When Walking?
They can.
High arches may change the way pressure is distributed through the foot. Some people with high arches remain completely comfortable, while others experience foot pain during prolonged activity.
If your arch pain consistently appears after walking and you have noticeably high arches, foot structure may be one factor worth considering.

Can Plantar Fasciitis Cause Arch Pain When Walking?
Yes. Plantar fasciitis can cause pain along the arch as well as around the heel.
The plantar fascia supports the arch and is repeatedly loaded during standing and walking. When it becomes irritated, walking can become painful.
Common clues include:
Pain with the first steps after rest
Heel or arch pain
Pain after prolonged standing
Pain during or after walking
Symptoms that fluctuate with activity
How Can You Tell What Is Causing Your Arch Pain?
You cannot reliably diagnose the cause based on one symptom alone.
Instead, look at five factors.
1. Location
Is the pain:
In the inner arch?
In the centre of the arch?
Near the heel?
Near the ball of the foot?
Along the side of the foot?
2. Timing
Does it happen:
3. Activity
Did it begin after:
More walking?
Running?
Hiking?
A new workout?
A new job?
Travel?
4. Footwear
Does the pain happen only in a particular pair of shoes?
5. Associated symptoms
Do you also have:
Healthcare providers use information about the location, duration and activity-related pattern of foot pain when determining the possible cause.
What Can You Do for Arch Pain When Walking?
Treatment should depend on the likely cause.
For mild activity-related discomfort without a significant injury, conservative steps may help.
Reduce the aggravating activity temporarily
If a particular walking distance consistently causes pain, temporarily reduce the distance rather than repeatedly pushing through it.
You can gradually increase activity again as symptoms allow.
Wear comfortable footwear
Choose shoes that fit properly and are appropriate for your activity.
Look for:
Consider an insole when appropriate
Insoles can provide cushioning, pressure redistribution or additional support for some people.
But an insole is not automatically the solution to every type of arch pain.
The right choice depends on why your foot hurts.
For related guidance, see How to Choose Insoles for Flat Feet.
Try gentle stretching
Gentle calf and foot stretching may be useful for some causes of foot pain, particularly plantar-fascia-related symptoms. Stretching is commonly included in conservative management approaches for plantar fasciitis.
Do not force a stretch into sharp pain.
Use ice for short-term comfort
If your foot is sore after activity, an ice pack wrapped in a towel may provide temporary relief.
Avoid placing ice directly on your skin.
Give your feet recovery time
Recovery is particularly important after sudden increases in walking.
If you walked significantly more than usual today, immediately repeating the same workload tomorrow may keep the irritation going.
Does Arch Support Help With Arch Pain When Walking?
Arch support can help some people, but more arch support is not necessarily better.
The usefulness of arch support depends on:
Orthotics and shoe inserts are among the treatment options used for some types of foot pain.
The goal should be comfortable support and appropriate pressure distribution, not simply finding the firmest arch support available.
Should I Stop Walking if My Arch Hurts?
Not necessarily.
For mild activity-related symptoms, reducing the amount or intensity of walking may be more appropriate than completely avoiding movement.
However, don't force yourself to keep walking through significant or worsening pain.
Stop and seek medical advice sooner if you have:
Cleveland Clinic recommends medical assessment for sudden or severe foot pain, pain following an injury and persistent symptoms.
Is Walking Good for Arch Pain?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer.
Walking may be perfectly reasonable for someone with mild symptoms that are improving, while continuing to walk long distances may aggravate an active injury or significant condition.
A useful principle is:
Don't use pain as a challenge to overcome; use symptoms as feedback about your current activity tolerance.
If a particular distance consistently causes pain, reduce the load and gradually build back up.
How to Prevent Arch Pain When Walking?
Increase walking gradually
If you're beginning a walking programme, avoid suddenly multiplying your daily distance.
Wear appropriate footwear
Choose footwear based on where and how you walk.
Replace worn-out shoes
Old shoes may no longer provide the same level of cushioning or structural support.
Take breaks during long periods of walking
If you're travelling or spending the day walking, short recovery periods can reduce continuous loading.
Strengthen and stretch appropriately
A physiotherapist can help identify exercises appropriate for your particular foot problem.
Don't ignore recurring symptoms
If the same arch pain appears every time you walk beyond a particular distance, investigate why.
Recurring pain is information.
When Should You See a Doctor for Arch Pain When Walking?
Consider professional evaluation if:
Your pain is severe
Your pain started after an injury
You cannot comfortably bear weight
Your foot is significantly swollen
You notice bruising or other visible changes
You experience numbness or persistent tingling
Your symptoms are worsening
Your arch appears to be changing
Pain continues despite reducing aggravating activity
The problem repeatedly returns
Cleveland Clinic recommends medical evaluation when foot pain is severe, follows an injury, persists without improvement or occurs alongside concerning symptoms.
A special note about pain that occurs only with walking
Pain triggered by walking but relieved by rest can have several explanations. Most are musculoskeletal, but not every walking-related foot or leg symptom is caused by the arch itself.
For example, peripheral artery disease can cause exertional leg or foot discomfort that typically begins with activity and improves after stopping.
This is one reason persistent or unusual walking-related pain should not automatically be attributed to footwear or arch support.
