People describe burning arch pain in different ways.
You may feel:
A hot or burning sensation
Stinging
Tingling
Pins and needles
Prickling
Shooting or electric-like pain
Burning combined with aching
Increased sensitivity when your foot touches the ground
A feeling that the sole of your foot is unusually warm
Burning feet can also occur with numbness or pins-and-needles sensations. Cleveland Clinic notes that burning-feet symptoms can include heat, burning, numbness, sharp or stabbing pain, prickling and tingling.
The type of sensation matters, because burning or electric sensations can point toward a different group of possible causes than ordinary post-exercise soreness.
There isn't one single cause of burning arch pain.
Some possible causes include:
Nerve irritation or peripheral neuropathy
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Footwear-related pressure
Overuse or repetitive activity
Plantar fascia irritation
Flat feet or altered foot mechanics
High arches and pressure distribution
Skin infections such as athlete's foot
Certain nutritional or metabolic conditions
Other nerve, musculoskeletal or medical conditions
Mayo Clinic lists peripheral neuropathy, diabetes-related neuropathy, tarsal tunnel syndrome, vitamin deficiencies, hypothyroidism, certain infections and several other conditions among possible causes of burning feet.
This is why persistent burning should not automatically be attributed to your shoes, your arches or exercise.
1. Nerve Irritation or Peripheral Neuropathy
One of the most important causes to consider when the sensation is genuinely burning, tingling, prickling or electric is nerve involvement.
Peripheral nerves carry sensory information between the feet and the nervous system. When these nerves are irritated or damaged, abnormal sensations can develop.
Nerve-related foot symptoms can include:
Cleveland Clinic describes nerve pain in the foot as potentially feeling like burning, tingling or an electric shock.
Mayo Clinic notes that persistent burning feet are often associated with peripheral nerve damage, although there are many possible causes and an accurate diagnosis requires medical assessment.
What can cause peripheral neuropathy?
There are numerous possible causes, including:
Diabetes
Certain vitamin deficiencies
Alcohol-related nerve damage
Some medications or chemotherapy
Kidney disease
Certain infections
Autoimmune conditions
Inherited neurological disorders
Other medical conditions
This does not mean that burning arch pain automatically means you have neuropathy.
Instead, burning that is persistent, unexplained or accompanied by numbness or tingling is a reason to discuss the symptoms with a healthcare professional.
2. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is another possible explanation for burning or tingling around the foot and arch.
The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space near the inside of the ankle. The posterior tibial nerve passes through this area.
When the nerve is compressed or irritated, symptoms can include:
Burning
Tingling
Pain
Numbness
Shooting sensations
Cleveland Clinic specifically notes that compression of the posterior tibial nerve in the tarsal tunnel can cause burning, tingling or pain in parts of the foot, including the arch.
Could tarsal tunnel cause burning in the arch?
Yes, it can.
Tarsal tunnel becomes more relevant when burning or tingling is concentrated around the inside of the ankle or arch and may radiate into the sole.
However, these symptoms overlap with other conditions, so a healthcare professional needs to determine whether nerve compression is actually responsible.
3. Footwear That Is Too Tight or Doesn't Fit Properly
Your shoes can sometimes contribute to burning sensations.
Shoes that are:
can place pressure on sensitive parts of the foot.
Cleveland Clinic identifies improperly fitting shoes and stockings among possible contributors to burning-feet symptoms.
Can tight shoes cause burning feet?
Yes.
If the burning begins after putting on a particular pair of shoes and improves after removing them, footwear may be one contributing factor.
Check:
However, if burning continues when you are barefoot or persists after changing footwear, do not assume shoes are the only cause.
4. Overuse and Repetitive Activity
Burning arch pain can sometimes develop after substantially increasing physical activity.
Potential triggers include:
Starting running
Increasing walking distance
Long periods of standing
Increasing workout intensity
Hiking
High-impact exercise
Returning to exercise after a long break
Repetitive sports activity
Cleveland Clinic identifies overuse, prolonged standing and sporting injuries among common contributors to foot pain.
The NHS also notes that exercise such as running can contribute to pain in the bottom of the foot.
When should you suspect overuse?
Think about what changed before the burning started.
Did you recently:
A sudden increase in activity may provide an important clue.
For running-specific arch pain, see Arch Pain After Running: Common Causes & Prevention.
5. Plantar Fascia Irritation
The plantar fascia is a strong band of connective tissue along the bottom of the foot that contributes to supporting the arch.
Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain around the heel and arch. The NHS describes pain around the heel and arch that may be worse with the first steps after sleeping or resting and may become worse with prolonged standing, walking or running.
Burning is not the only possible sensation associated with plantar fascia problems, and the classic symptom pattern is more important than the word “burning” alone.
Could plantar fasciitis cause burning arch pain?
It can contribute to painful sensations around the arch, but burning does not automatically mean plantar fasciitis.
If you have:
Heel and arch pain
Significant pain with the first steps after rest
Pain that changes with activity
Recent increases in running, walking or standing
plantar fascia irritation may be worth considering.
For the dedicated condition-specific guide, see Understanding Plantar Fasciitis: Causes, Symptoms & What You Need to Know.
6. Flat Feet and Altered Foot Mechanics
Flat feet are common, and many people with flat feet have no symptoms.
However, some people with flat feet experience pain around the arch or inside of the foot, particularly when symptoms are associated with activity. Mayo Clinic notes that painful flat feet can cause pain in the arch or along the inside of the foot and ankle, with symptoms sometimes worsening with activity.
Can flat feet cause burning arch pain?
Flat feet may contribute to foot discomfort in some people, but burning pain should not automatically be blamed on flat feet.
If you have flat feet and burning sensations, consider whether there are additional clues:
For more information about flat feet, see Flat Feet: Causes, Symptoms & What You Need to Know.
7. High Arches and Pressure Distribution
High arches can affect the way pressure is distributed through the foot.
That does not mean that a high arch automatically causes burning pain.
If you have high arches and recurrent symptoms, consider whether the burning occurs:
The shape of your arch is only one piece of the puzzle.
8. Athlete's Foot and Other Skin Conditions
Not all burning sensations are caused by nerves or deeper structures.
Athlete's foot, a fungal infection of the skin, can cause itching, burning and stinging. Cleveland Clinic notes that athlete's foot can affect the soles of the feet and may be encouraged by warm, moist environments such as damp shoes and socks.
Look for accompanying skin changes such as:
If burning is accompanied by obvious skin changes, a skin condition may need to be considered.
9. Medical Conditions That Can Cause Burning Feet
Persistent burning feet can sometimes be associated with an underlying medical condition.
Examples include:
Diabetes
Peripheral neuropathy
Hypothyroidism
Certain vitamin deficiencies
Kidney disease
Certain infections
Some autoimmune conditions
Certain medications or chemotherapy
Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic both emphasize that burning-feet symptoms have multiple possible causes and that identifying the underlying condition is important for appropriate treatment.
Can burning feet be a sign of diabetes?
It can be associated with diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy, but burning feet alone cannot diagnose diabetes.
If burning or tingling is persistent or unexplained-particularly if it affects both feet-discuss it with a healthcare professional.
Why Is My Arch Burning?
If you're asking “Why is my arch burning?”, start by looking at the pattern.
Burning only after exercise
Overuse, repetitive loading, footwear or another activity-related problem may be relevant.
Burning only in certain shoes
Pressure or footwear fit may be contributing.
Burning with tingling or numbness
A nerve-related cause becomes more important to consider.
Burning at night
Persistent burning that becomes more noticeable at night can occur with some nerve-related conditions. Cleveland Clinic notes that burning-feet symptoms may become more intense at night.
Burning with itching or skin changes
Consider a skin condition such as athlete's foot.
Burning with swelling or significant pain
An injury or another inflammatory or structural problem may need assessment.
These patterns are clues, not diagnoses.
A burning sensation means your nervous system or the tissues of the foot are producing an unusual sensation. It does not necessarily mean the foot is actually hotter.
The most useful questions are:
Is the skin actually warm or red?
Is there swelling?
Is there numbness?
Is there tingling?
Is there itching?
Is the sensation in one foot or both?
Does it happen during activity or at rest?
Is it worse at night?
Did it start after changing shoes?
Did it begin after increasing exercise?
These details can help a healthcare professional narrow down the possible cause.
Why Do My Feet Burn at Night?
Burning feet can sometimes become more noticeable at night.
Cleveland Clinic notes that burning-feet symptoms may intensify at night, while Mayo Clinic notes that burning feet can sometimes be severe enough to interfere with sleep.
Night-time burning can have multiple explanations, so it should not automatically be interpreted as neuropathy.
Pay particular attention if the burning is:
Persistent unexplained burning warrants medical evaluation.
Why Are Both of My Feet Burning?
Burning in both feet can sometimes suggest a systemic or nerve-related cause rather than a problem affecting only one specific structure.
Possible causes include:
Peripheral neuropathy
Diabetes-related nerve damage
Certain vitamin deficiencies
Certain metabolic conditions
Medication effects
Other neurological conditions
This does not mean that bilateral burning automatically indicates a medical disease.
However, persistent burning in both feet is worth discussing with a healthcare professional, particularly if accompanied by numbness or tingling.
Burning in one foot may be associated with a more localized issue such as:
Tarsal tunnel syndrome, for example, involves compression or irritation of a nerve around the ankle and can cause burning or tingling in parts of the foot.
A clinician can help determine whether the symptoms are coming from a local foot problem or something affecting the nervous system more generally.
Burning combined with tingling is particularly important to pay attention to.
Tingling, pins and needles, numbness and electric-like sensations can occur with nerve-related foot pain. Cleveland Clinic specifically describes nerve pain as potentially burning, tingling or electric-shock-like.
If you regularly experience:
Burning + tingling + numbness
rather than simple post-exercise soreness, consider discussing the symptoms with a healthcare professional.
Burning accompanied by loss of sensation deserves more attention than isolated temporary soreness.
Mayo Clinic recommends medical assessment when burning feet persist, become more intense, spread up the legs or are accompanied by loss of feeling in the feet or toes.
Do not attempt to diagnose the cause based on symptoms alone.
Because burning arch pain can have many causes, the best solution depends on what is causing it.
For mild symptoms without obvious warning signs, some general measures may help.
1. Reduce the activity that aggravates the burning
If symptoms clearly become worse after:
Running
Long walks
Standing
High-impact exercise
temporarily reduce the aggravating activity.
The NHS recommends resting and avoiding sports or activities that appear to cause bottom-of-foot pain.
2. Check your footwear
Choose shoes that:
If symptoms disappear when you remove a particular pair of shoes, footwear may be contributing.
3. Try gentle cooling for temporary relief
For some forms of foot pain, an ice pack wrapped in a towel can provide temporary relief.
The NHS recommends applying an ice pack for up to 20 minutes every 2–3 hours for pain in the bottom of the foot.
Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
If you have reduced sensation in your feet, discuss safe use of cold therapy with a healthcare professional rather than relying on it without guidance.
4. Gentle stretching may help some activity-related pain
Gentle foot and ankle stretching can be useful for some causes of bottom-of-foot pain.
The NHS includes gentle foot and ankle stretching among self-care measures for bottom-of-foot pain.
Do not force a stretch through burning, sharp or increasing pain.
5. Consider whether an insole is appropriate
An insole may change how pressure is distributed through the foot, but more arch support is not automatically better.
If an insole creates a strong pressure point exactly where you feel burning, it may not be the right fit for you.
For a broader explanation of what arch support does, see What Does Arch Support Do? Benefits, Uses & Who Needs It.
If you are exploring insoles, see Frido's Insole Collection.
However, an insole should not be used to mask persistent unexplained burning, especially when numbness or tingling is present.
Can Shoes Cause Burning Feet?
Yes.
Shoes that are too tight, poorly fitting or otherwise irritating can contribute to burning sensations.
Cleveland Clinic specifically lists footwear that is too tight, too soft and thin-soled, or poorly fitting among possible causes of burning-feet symptoms.
If you suspect your shoes:
Try a comfortable, properly fitting alternative.
Check whether the burning improves.
Look for pressure points.
Check whether the symptoms occur only during footwear use.
Avoid continuing to wear a pair that consistently reproduces the symptoms.
If burning persists even without the shoes, look beyond footwear as the explanation.
Can Running Cause Burning Pain in the Arch?
Running can contribute to foot pain because it places repetitive loads on the foot.
The NHS lists running and other exercise among potential causes of pain in the bottom of the foot.
If burning specifically occurs after running, consider:
For the running-specific article in this cluster, see Arch Pain After Running: Common Causes & Prevention.
Burning Pain After Walking or Standing
If your burning arch pain occurs primarily after walking, avoid assuming it has the same cause as burning that occurs at rest.
For walking-related arch pain, see Arch Pain When Walking: Causes & Solutions.
For symptoms that primarily appear after prolonged standing, see Arch Pain After Standing All Day: Why It Happens.
This separation is important because the trigger can provide useful information about the underlying problem.
It can be, but not every case is serious.
Temporary burning after prolonged activity, pressure from footwear or a skin irritation may improve after the trigger is removed.
However, persistent or unexplained burning deserves more attention.
More reassuring patterns
Mild and temporary
Clearly linked to a particular pair of shoes
Occurs after unusually strenuous activity
Improves after rest
No numbness or weakness
No swelling or significant injury
More concerning patterns
Burning that persists for weeks
Symptoms that progressively worsen
Burning spreading into the legs
Numbness
Tingling
Weakness
Loss of sensation
Significant swelling
Open wounds
Symptoms that interfere with sleep
Mayo Clinic recommends medical evaluation when burning feet persist despite self-care, become more intense, spread up the legs or involve loss of sensation.
When Should You See a Doctor for Burning Feet?
Consider seeing a healthcare professional if:
Burning persists despite reasonable self-care
The sensation keeps returning
It is becoming more intense
You develop numbness
You develop tingling
You notice weakness
The sensation spreads toward your legs
You have unexplained burning in both feet
The symptoms interfere with sleep
You have diabetes or another condition that may affect nerve health
Mayo Clinic specifically recommends an office visit for persistent burning feet, increasing symptoms, symptoms spreading up the legs or loss of feeling in the toes or feet.
Cleveland Clinic likewise recommends speaking with a healthcare provider if burning or tingling persists, worsens or does not improve with home treatment.
Seek urgent medical attention if burning foot symptoms occur with:
A serious injury
Severe pain or swelling
Inability to walk or bear weight
An open wound with signs of infection
Significant redness and warmth
Fever or feeling acutely unwell
Sudden severe symptoms after possible toxin exposure
Mayo Clinic advises immediate medical attention for serious foot pain or swelling, inability to bear weight, signs of infection or certain high-risk wounds.
If you have diabetes and develop a concerning foot wound, prompt medical evaluation is especially important.
A Simple Checklist for Burning Arch Pain
If your arch feels like it is burning, consider these questions.
Where is the burning?
What does it feel like?
Burning?
Hot?
Stinging?
Tingling?
Pins and needles?
Electric?
Numb?
When does it happen?
What changed?
Are there other symptoms?
Numbness?
Weakness?
Swelling?
Redness?
Itching?
Skin changes?
These details can help a healthcare professional understand the symptom pattern.
Burning Arch Pain vs Sharp Arch Pain
Burning and sharp pain can overlap, but they are not necessarily the same symptom.
Sharp arch pain often describes a stabbing, piercing or sudden sensation.
Burning arch pain describes heat, burning, stinging, tingling or an abnormal nerve-like sensation.
If the dominant sensation is sharp or stabbing, see Sharp Pain in the Arch of the Foot: Causes & When to Seek Help.
If the dominant sensation is burning, hot, tingling or pins and needles, this article is the more relevant guide.
Burning Arch Pain vs General Arch Pain
General arch pain can result from many causes, including activity, plantar fascia problems, foot structure, footwear and injuries.
Burning pain deserves an additional question:
Could there be a nerve-related or skin-related component?
That does not mean that every burning sensation is neurological. It means the quality of the symptom provides additional information.
For a broader overview, see Arch Pain: Causes, Symptoms & How to Relieve It.
Key Takeaways
If you have burning pain in the arch of your foot, remember:
Burning arch pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Nerve irritation is one important possible cause, particularly when burning occurs with tingling or numbness.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome can cause burning or tingling around the arch because of irritation or compression of the posterior tibial nerve.
Tight or poorly fitting footwear can contribute to burning foot symptoms.
Overuse and repetitive activity can contribute to foot pain.
Plantar fascia problems can cause pain around the heel and arch, but burning does not automatically mean plantar fasciitis.
Flat feet or high arches may influence foot mechanics but do not automatically explain burning sensations.
Itching, peeling or other skin changes may point toward a skin condition such as athlete's foot.
Persistent burning, especially with numbness, tingling, weakness or spreading symptoms, deserves medical assessment.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause-there is no single solution that works for every case.
